Gallery 16 Celebrates 25th Anniversary Announces 2018 Programming and New Documentary

Since its founding by Griff Williams in 1993, Gallery 16 has remained dedicated to the belief that the brick and mortar gallery is vital to the advocacy and nurturing of working artists, the local community and its creative culture.

In keeping with this mission, the year kicks off with a (Post) Holiday Party benefiting the San Francisco Food Bank and will be followed by a robust exhibition lineup, public programs, and a documentary produced by the gallery tracing the Bay Area arts scene and the core artists, musicians, and writers who have contributed to the strength and longevity of Gallery 16.

In celebration of its 25th anniversary year, Gallery 16 is pleased to announce its 2018 program.

Join Gallery 16 for its sixth Annual (Post) Holiday Party benefiting the San Francisco Food Bank. Live musical performances by legendary iconoclast LAMBCHOP as well as VETIVER and Marc Capelle & Tom Ayres, with surprise guests. Guests are encouraged to be as generous as they are able. The guest list is limited to 300, so please get your tickets quickly!

Sonny Smith: Tour

Opening reception: Fri., Feb 2 from 6–9pm
Artist, musician and playwright Sonny Smith’s new exhibition reveals the absurdity of a musician’s life on the road. The artist depicts touring as a powerful feat that leads to significant gains (or losses) of success, self-discovery, and invaluable experience. The new works include a wide variety of overlapping mediums including painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and music. Smith along with The Sunsets will perform at the opening reception. 

Dave Huebner: Dave H's "Art" Show
Feb 2–Mar 31, 2018
Opening reception: Fri., Feb 2 from 6–9pm
Dave Huebner creates work as he travels the country in a rebuilt van outfitted with a darkroom, recording studio and a mini-drum kit. The collection includes paintings of bygone artifacts from the 80’s and 90’s, as well as travel and surf photos. The artist’s van will be on view at the opening reception for guests to experience the artist's mobile studio.

Alice Shaw: Cloned
April 6–May 26
Opening reception: Fri., April 6 from 6–9pm
Using imagery of a single sheep, Alice Shaw examines the tension between the antiquated photo subject and the contemporary perspective. Serving as a potent symbol, the sheep is a stand-in allowing Shaw to reference a past era and the cloning ability of the photograph with its near limitless ability to reproduce multiples from a single original. Cloned is comprised of both traditional and digital photos, stereo images and sculptural pieces.

Adriane Colburn: Semiprecious
April 6–May 26
Opening reception: Fri., April 6 from 6–9pm 
Semiprecious is a series of works based on global transportation maps and sites of mass material extraction. For this exhibition, Adriane Colburn references satellite images of locations around the globe to create large-scale mixed-media pieces assembled from paper, metal, wood and stainless steel. The exhibition underscores resilience and how we are able to experience the world through technology.

Nathaniel Russell: Peace Jazz 
June 1–July 28
Opening reception: Fri., June 1 from 6–9pm
Indianapolis-based artist Nathaniel Russell works across a wide range of mediums including prints, paintings, zines, and wood sculpture. For Peace Jazz, Russell continues his message of human connection with humor and a sense of poetry, exploring the mysteries and wonders of being alive on planet earth. Last Fall The New York Times featured Russell's satirical and thought-provoking “fake fliers” from his new book Fliers: 20 Small Posters with Big Thoughts.

Gallery 16 Documentary
In celebration of its 25th Anniversary, Gallery 16 has produced a documentary honoring the strong bonds and community it has created with the many Bay Area artists, musicians and writers with who have helped shape the gallery into what it is today. Through interviews and studio visits with many of the central figures in the Bay Area arts, the documentary looks at the ever evolving local art scene.

Jason Middlebrook
September 7–October 27
Opening reception: Fri., Sept 7 from 6–9pm
Jason Middlebrook has long been interested in man’s complex and often adversarial relationship with nature. He gathers his creative inspiration from both nature and technology, transferring their complex relationship into works of sculpture, installation, painting, and large-scale drawing. Middlebrook has mounted solo exhibitions at a number of institutions, including the New Museum (New York), the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum (Connecticut), and the Santa Monica Museum of Art. 

Carolyn Salas
September 7–October 27
Opening reception: Fri., Sept 7 from 6–9pm
Carolyn Salas is a sculptor and installation artist based in New York. The artist finds interest in the “in-between” stages; the tension that lies both within the physical space and the psychological space. The work oscillates between abstraction and figuration, between site-specific works and sculpture employing a wide array of materials including, found objects, collage, craft-oriented assemblages, fabric and recycled items. 

Decades in the Making, a Rotating Show, Highlights The New Hackett Mill Gallery

Jered Sprecher
November 2–December 21
Opening reception: Fri., Nov 2 from 6–9pm
Jered Sprecher is based in Knoxville, TN where he is an Associate Professor at The University of Tennessee. His studio practice is concerned with the images, marks and objects we make as human beings and the longing that is connected to those things. The artist recently presented a solo show with the Knoxville Museum of Art.

Fox Hysen
November 2–December 21
Opening reception: Fri., Nov 2 from 6–9pm 
Fox Hysen’s work deals with the relationship between painting, digital technology, and photography. The artist’s current interest involves shifting back and forth between digital material and handmade objects. Hyson recently completed a year-long residency with Headlands Center for the Arts as the 2016—17 recipient of the prestigious Tournesol Award.
