World News: Israel, Lebanon, and the U.S. Election

Israel's armed offensive on southern Lebanon, carried out to the detriment of the civilian population, confirms the impunity enjoyed by the Jewish state, which is itself convinced of the relevance of these political, diplomatic and military choices.

Some would evoke a boundless cynicism in the attitude of Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Prime Minister, who has launched a massive offensive against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, without worrying about the collateral effects that the bombings have generated and will generate.

Convinced of the relevance of the Israeli army's action, aware of the potential risk of a general conflagration in the region, Benjamin Netanyahu nevertheless knows that his bellicose policy can be applied without Israel or him being worried.

And for good reason, the Israeli Prime Minister knows that he is protected by the United States, which even at the United Nations through the voice of Joe Biden, president of the homeland of Uncle Sam, has in no way condemned the Israeli intervention in Lebanon, simply calling for a peaceful and negotiated resolution of the conflict.

Oil Prices and the Presidential Election

And it is there, in this form of impunity, that the cynicism of the Israeli Prime Minister lies, certain that the North American ally will never defect or fail him, impressing Iran in spite of everything, finally anxious to avoid a flare-up of the conflict, Egypt, reluctant to embark on a local conflict, not to mention the markets, especially the price of oil,  which would not fail to get carried away in the event that the conflict degenerated.

However, time is running out for Israel because a few weeks before the next presidential election in the United States, no one knows if the successor will be as conciliatory as the current occupant of the White House.

If Donald Trump were to win the election, it is likely that Israel could continue its offensive without fear; on the other hand, if Kamala Harris were to prevail in November, the position of the United States, despite the latter's cautious statements, could potentially change Israel's bellicose policy and thus reshuffle the cards in the Middle East.

Without wanting to put the Jewish state in a position of weakness, the more moderate support of the United States for Israel would be a signal of détente in the region. But for the time being, the near-indiscriminate bombings carried out by Israel, which in some ways can be likened to a double-edged race against time, i.e. to retain the support of the United States and defeat Hezbollah as soon as possible, are terrorizing the Lebanese population without settling the Gaza question.
