CURE SPA MALIBU Review - A Blissful Indulgence

CURE MED SPA Malibu, a health and wellness center, offering a variety of treatments guaranteed to calm body, mind and soul recently provided an afternoon of treatments at its newest facilities overlooking the incredible Pacific Ocean.

Having Day-of-Show credentials for the 85th Academy Awards, I had been on the go and yes, stressing the dress, as well as life management issues, I woke up the Friday before the Academy Awards knowing I needed a trip to Cure Spa.

In addition, I had a film press day, so up at 5:45am, I shot an early email over to the Cure’s PR rep asking, I know on short notice, if there was any possibility of arranging a manicure and pedicure and massage. About four emails later, Beverly, Cure Spa’s external PR rep, explained that I would be receiving a call from the in-house Cure team and they could work it out.

About 10:00AM Katy, from CURE MED SPA, called and after a short conversation offered a massage and facial, explaining they don’t do the manicure and pedicure.  I told her I was concerned about an allergic reaction, and having visions of Samantha Jones at Carrie Bradshaw’s book launch party, said no to the facial.

So, after finishing the Four Seasons Media Day, off I went to sunny, lovely, relaxing Malibu!

CURE MED SPA Malibu created by Dr. Lisa Benya, who has been serving Malibu for over 10 years in her private practice, has expanded into a spacious facility with several treatment rooms, and a large private deck overlooking Dume Point, north on the Pacific Coast Highway, and the shimmering Pacific Ocean.

CURE MED SPA Malibu, is located across from the new Nobu, with incredible views, as far as the eye can see of the Pacific Ocean.  It was a gorgeous, spectacular day!

Upon arrival, Katy, explained the services offered included a 60 minute combination deep tissue and Swedish massage.  All clients are given a release form to fill out and then shown to a private changing room with shower and steam room. Personal items are locked in cabinets located in the same room. Robes and slippers are provided.

CURE MED SPA Malibu offers clients a green tea, Health-Ade, and honestly, I’m not a health junkie, examining metabolic relations with food consumption, whatever that means, so I was somewhat hesitant to sample, and must admit it was better, in fact the tea tasted good. It was refreshing and went along, as Katy explained, “With the CURE MED SPA wellness theme.” Not that I’ll rush out and stock my cabinets with it but it wasn’t bad.

The pre-treatment relaxation process begins with the atmosphere. Stepping out on the exquisite patio, the fresh sea air, beautiful blue sky, warm sun and the stunning view of the Malibu coastline and Pacific Ocean seems to act as a stress reduction agent. With the cacophony of Los Angeles somewhere in the deep distance, my stress truly began to evaporate.

After sipping my green tea and lounging on the teak patio furniture, the massage therapist, Deborah, asked if I was ready to begin.

The Malibu location of CURE MED SPA is their newest. The décor is clean lines, contemporary, indoor sitting room with white walls, white sofa, soft blonde wood cabinetry and trim, and smoked green glass doors. The massage treatment room had two massage tables.

Having had both Swedish and Deep Tissue massages before I knew somewhat to expect. As always the massage begins with shoulders, neck and back work. So lying face down, unclothed, and the CURE SPA tables are heated, Deborah, the massage therapist, began. The difference was immediately noticeable. At CURE MED SPA the tables are heated, nice and warm, a blanket, very cozy and comfortable. Then she applied a deep moisturizing cream on my feet and wrapped them in heated towels, steaming, throughout the first part of the massage. Also, only the area of the body being massaged at the time was exposed.

The first thirty or forty minutes, it was pretty silent as Deborah kneaded the stress knots from my back, shoulders and neck as well as upper hip. She is a skillful technician with eleven years of massage practice. She explained the procedure for employment and it does include a massage as well as informational questions. During formal training, all massage therapists are required to concentrate on a particular method of study, deep tissue, Swedish or any other the other eighty possible massage techniques. She explained when a client has a deep tissue massages the muscles, that were constricted due to stress or tension, open up and the blood flows more freely and when the massage is completed the client could have momentary lightheadedness.

After the massage was completed, I chose to continue relaxing in the steam located in the changing room. If that is the client’s choice the therapist messages the front staff and the steam room is prepared prior to completion of the treatment.

Walking in I felt knotted with stress, and when I left, the tension and stress had evaporated. The massage therapist, Deborah, had mentioned there might be muscle soreness or tenderness over the next couple of days and to alleviate the possibility of that to soak in Epsom salts. Fortunately, there was only minimal muscle tenderness.

The CURE MED SPA is an experience not to be missed; a blissful escape. The staff courteous, the atmosphere and location, without equal, and the treatment, the best, truly the best massage I’ve ever received.
