Against The Ice Review – Compelling, Engaging, Gripping

Against The Ice, a Netflix Original film, brings to the screen the true story of Danish explorers Ejnar Mikkelsen and Iver Iversen, who survive the harsh conditions of the Artic while securing the evidence proving Greenland is one island.

The film begins with a pan of deeply frozen tundra, and then the whoosh as the dogsled glides across the ice, with a team of huskies pulling two men. Suddenly, towering from behind an iceberg, a ship's mast peaks like beacon of hope across the bitter cold night.

From inside the ship, the Alabama, the crew hears the yells of the Captain, Ejnar Mikkelsen, played by Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and his first mate, Jorgensen, played by Gisli Gardarsson. In minutes we understand the dangers of the expedition, as the men perform an emergency surgery to remove the first mates frostbitten toes.

Frozen in the sea the men on the Alabama, are waiting for the winter to pass so the ship will loose from the ice and they can return to Denmark. As Christmas arrives, Mikkelsen announces he is heading out again to find the evidence left from the lost Danish explorers proving Greenland land size and that he needs a volunteer to accompany him.

As each of the men saw the effects of frostbite and understand the expedition is a suicide mission, no one volunteers. The next day, the mechanic, Iver Iversen, played by Joe Cole, who had been scheduled to work on the R.S.S. Titanic, approached the captain and explained he would like to be considered for the journey.

Mikkelsen issues an order to his first mate, if by August they haven't returned, leave.

Suddenly the two men, who have nothing in common, are gliding across the ice. Over the course of the next six months, after finding the journals of those explorers who successfully secured the evidence that Greenland is one island, the two learn to depend on each other, and face the harsh challenges of the climate the ice, the winter, the dwindling supplies, fatigue and a polar bear attack, and finally the death of the last of two dog teams, the two are left to walk back to the Alabama.

Seeing the mast rise above the iceberg, they realize they team left them. What follows is a story of survival over 900 days.

With his former crew testifying in Danish court and hoping to get additionally funding to return and rescue Mikkelsen and Iversen hope to be rescued and now, even in a hut, with ample supplies, they now must fight to stay alive. As the days grow longer, their mental hold on reality starts to fade, breeding mistrust and paranoia, a dangerous cocktail in their fight for survival.
