Screen Australia-Onbass Fellowships To Be Awarded To Australian Filmmakers To Attend AFI Conservatory

The American Film Institute (AFI) today announces the Screen Australia-Onbass Fellowships, the initial two full-tuition scholarships to attend the AFI Conservatory, which will be awarded for the 2019 and 2020 academic years, for a Master of Fine Arts degree.

Applicants are encouraged to apply to any one of six disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting.

Created in partnership with Screen Australia and the Onbass Family Trust, formed by Village Roadshow Entertainment Group CEO Greg Basser and his wife Kiera O'Neill, the Fellowships will provide full tuition and fees, as well as some support for living expenses, to one Australian filmmaker entering the AFI Conservatory in the fall of 2019 and one in the fall of 2020 — to join the graduating classes of 2021 and 2022, respectively.

The Screen Australia-Onbass Fellowships will be presented in collaboration with G'Day USA, Australia's premier public and economic diplomacy program in the United States.

Fellowship applications to join the AFI Conservatory in the fall of 2019 will be due by October 15, 2018, with the recipient being announced at the G'Day USA Gala in Los Angeles in January 2019.

"Aussie Fellows will join a diverse and international community of talented filmmakers at AFI. Each year, approximately 40% of the Fellows admitted to the AFI Conservatory arrive from outside of the United States — coming together to make movies for two years," said Richard N. Gladstein, Dean, AFI Conservatory. "We are very pleased that these new scholarships will ensure even more Aussie filmmakers will be a part of our creative community."

"By establishing the Screen Australia-Onbass Fellowships in partnership with Screen Australia, we are seeking to open another door for Aussies wanting to hone their U.S.-market skill set, with the benefit of learning quite literally in Hollywood's backyard," said Greg Basser.

Notable AFI Conservatory alumnus Brad Falchuk — a writer, producer, director and co-creator of projects including AMERICAN HORROR STORY, GLEE and POSE — announced the scholarships in a video. Watch here:  http://bit.ly/BradFalchukScreenAustralia.
