Thorley, a Jaguar historian, presents this ode to the luxury automaker by introducing reader's to its very humble beginnings in a garage in Blackpool, England, and the chance meeting of two men, William Lyons, a motorcycle sales man, and William Walmsley, who was developing a sidecar for motorcycles. The two went into business and created the Swallow Sidecar Company. The evolution of the automobile industry quickly outgrew the idea of sidecars, and the pair, in just six years, had developed a prototype for a four wheel automobiles, shown it to the UK's most prominent automobile distributor and the rest one can say is automotive history.

Told chronically, the first four chapters are dedicated to the early years of Jaguar, with post-World War II, Postwar Pushrod Year, providing an in-depth understanding of what automotive manufacturers were up against in Post-War UK, a bankrupt government and the need to bring in much needed funds through exports. The new priority for Jaguar was overseas sales, which served to increase the brand awareness but more importantly bring critical funds back to the UK.

Racing, which wowed the world, was also an opportunity for manufactures to showcase its newest models, and the more sleek, pared down, racing models. Of course, with a name like Jaguar, racing seemed to be in the automobile's DNA. Jaguar earned its place in the booming Post-World War II automotive industry as a luxury automobile, but also as a leader in the evolution of racing winning Le Mans using the XK-150 engine on five separate occasions, 1951, 1953, 1955, 1956, and 1957.
