Russian Ukraine War Enters Year Two

As the Russian-Ukraine War marks a grim milestone and enters year two, the first year of battle has been filled with horrifying, gruesome and heartbreaking images as the Russian Federation troops, under the leadership of Russian President Vladimir Putin, brutalized private citizens with unrelenting air raids killing unarmed civilian men, women, and children.

The leaders of the G7, through the White House press office, released a statement condemning "Russia's illegal, unjustifiable, and unprovoked war." The statement which outlined the unified position of the United States and the world's seven leading economies Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the UK and in a non-named position the EU, also stated "At the one-year mark of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, we, the Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7), met with Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to reaffirm our unwavering support for Ukraine for as long as it takes. Russia's heinous attacks over the last 365 days have laid bare the cruelty of the ongoing aggression."

In actions shocking to even his most loyal allies, Putin initiated an unprovoked war with the purpose of annexation and realigning the former Soviet Union to its pre-1990, boundaries. In the days leading to the initial invasion, February 24, 2022, the buildup of Russian troops along the Ukraine border lead global military analyst to predict a swift take-over of the capital city Kyiv and the fall of the Ukraine.

Perceptional Bias Predicated Failures

The subsequent invasion and heroism portrayed by Ukraine's limited military under the leadership of a youthful Volodymyr Zelenskyy surprised the world. Military analysts, the world over, did not count the Ukraine as a near-peer adversary and thus gave them limited chance of surviving the initial onslaught.

Moreover, as the Russian Federation military lined up on the border, it appeared they had all they held the advantage simply by might, the appearance of a well-built military with advance weaponry. Analysts here, also were incorrect as they assume from the amount of weaponry and the size of the military would result in a swift victory.

Both the Russian and Ukraine militaries have changed markedly over the past year of battle. "Neither of these armies look today the way they did at the beginning of the war. Both have taken heavy losses. Both have lost a lot of their best people and best equipment," said [Michael] Kofman, an expert on the Russian military at the Center for Naval Analyses," NPR reported.

For the Ukraine, who is receiving billions in aid mainly in the form of military equipment, is continually seeing a more modern replenishments of its lost armaments and will soon see, as nations around the world have committed to providing additional aid to help fight against air control, fighter jets to help combat the supremacy that Russian Federation troops have exhibited.

Ukraine forces will soon be one of the most globally advanced militaries in the world and the Russian-Ukraine war will be the testing ground for many armaments.

Biden Promises Ukraine Partnership

President Biden said, in a released statement, "When Putin launched his invasion nearly one year ago, he thought Ukraine was weak and the West was divided. He thought he could outlast us. But he was dead wrong."

Even as the war against Ukraine was unprovoked, the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula in 2014, and subsequent failure of repercussions gave way to a false sense of security and a belief that the world would not rise in defense of a smaller insignificant nation.

Had Putin followed a similar battle plan, the probability of a similar resulting action may have been the outcome. However, as the world has witnessed the atrocities, slaughter, massacres, torture of civilians, non-combatants, Putin's true nature, a deep-seeded hatred for people of the Ukraine who are so closely aligned to Russia, in culture, language, in beliefs that the onslaught provoked a in kind determination to fight for justice and independence until tomorrow ceases to exist.

Violations of The Geneva Convention, War Crimes

In areas liberated from Russian forces, there is evidence of mass graves, sexual violence, torture, and other atrocities and throughout the past year the world has witnessed Putin and Russian Federation Forces continued violations of the Geneva Convention, that governs "international humanitarian law, which regulates the conduct of armed conflict and seeks to limit its effects. They protect people not taking part in hostilities and those who are no longer doing so."

The siege of Mariupol, one of the bloodiest and violent battles, quickly revealed Putin's strategy with the intentional bombing of hospital maternity wards killing women and newborns. Documented evidence shows Putin's indiscriminate air raids killed innocent children, elderly, without thought or concern.

It was then that the world began to see the true evil of Vladimir Putin. Destroying the people, non-combatants, crippling and immobilizing their spirit and then starving them to death cruelty reminiscent of dictators the world over.

The heaviest battles have been in the grain rich area of the Donbas region, the former home to more than 4 million Ukrainians and the Donetsk area, which is known as the breadbasket and subsequently, which the international community became acutely aware over the course of the year, as the blockade of grain from Ukraine resulted in a global spike of wheat and grain prices globally.

G7 Announces Unwavering Support

While the G7 has announced its unwavering support of the independence of Ukraine, European nations, including France and Germany, have reminded Zelenskyy of the necessity of one day considering the option of a peace treaty, reminding him that after every World War, which left countless dead, and laid bare cities within the European Continent, and affected people the world over, nations had to sign peace treaties.

"President Emmanuel Macron of France and Chancellor Olaf Scholz of Germany told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky that he needed to start considering peace talks with Moscow when the three leaders met in Paris earlier this month, people familiar with the conversation said," reported The Wall Street Journal.

UN Passes Resolution Calling for Russia to End Ukraine War

Russia has confronted global condemnation for its actions beginning with the unlawful annexation of the Crimea in 2014. At the time, Putin was expelled from the G7 and condemned by the United States. The recent vote by the United Nation once again places Putin in a singular fight against the world's governing body.

"The U.N. General Assembly approved a nonbinding resolution Thursday that calls for Russia to end hostilities in Ukraine and withdraw its forces, sending a strong message on the eve of the first anniversary of the invasion that Moscow's aggression must stop. The resolution, drafted by Ukraine in consultation with its allies, passed 141-7, with 32 abstentions," APnews.com reported.

Over the past year the sanctions and condemnations against Russia have resulted in paralyzing the economy making it nearly impossible to fund the war effort. To combat Russia's illegal aggression, and third-party state actors who may supply Russia, the White House has announced "We are committed to preventing Russia from finding new ways to acquire advanced materials, technology, and military and industrial equipment from our jurisdictions that it can use to develop its industrial sectors and further its violations of international law. "

Ohio Train Derailment Becomes 2024 Presidential Whistlestop

East Palestine, Ohio, the site of the Norfolk Southern train derailment and chemical spill, has become more than an environmental disaster as former President Donald Trump showed up this week, making this small town of 5,000 a Whistlestop on his way to securing the GOP 2024 nomination for President.

"At an East Palestine firehouse where he met first-responders and local elected officials, Mr. Trump, in remarks behind a lectern, said that "what this community needs now are not excuses and all of the other things you've been hearing, but answers and results,"' reported The New York Times.

Ohio's 18 electoral votes, and historically split demographic, and lack of immediate response from Biden Administration Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, have added additional political toxic fuel to the growing ecological concerns.

The follow-up visit by Transportation Secretary Buttigieg has been criticized as too little, too late and moreover his failure to understand the culture of the region depicted him as someone out of touch with the realities of this common man community that is now confronting the potential of decades of health-related problems.

The sentencing on Thursday all but ensures that the 70-year-old former Hollywood mogul, who is in declining health, will spend the rest of his life in prison," The New York Times reported.
