Money News: DOW, World Markets Close Up; Nikkei Sinks

The DOW Jones Industrial Average, as well as nine of the top ten world markets, rallied as investor confidence once again returned, to the global stage, with economies and markets exhibiting strong gains across the board.

The DOW rallied and held steady throughout the week to post double digit gains to close up at 18,019.35 (+46.97/+0.26%). Opening at 17,968.65, the DOW held a daily range of 17,961.76-to-18,037.41.

Gainers for the week include Caterpillar Inc (+1.62/+1.94%) with a closing price of $85.14 per share, Microsoft Corp (+0.78/+1.81%) with a closing price of $43.86 per share, Chevron Corp (+1.89/+1.70%) with a closing price of $112.75, United Technologies Corp (+1.68/+1.40%) with a closing price of $121.27.

Losers for the week include American Express Co closing down at $78.09 per share down (-2.39/-2.97%), Pfizer Inc closing down at $34.64 with a loss of (-0.22/-0.63%), Coca-Cola Co also closed down at $41.98 for a loss of (-0.20/-0.46%) and Visa Inc closing down at $269.66 per share for a loss of (-1.15/-0.42%)

Active for the week included Cisco Systems moved 40.39M shares in heavy trading to close down at $29.43 per share with a loss (-0.10%), American Express Co in light trading moved 31.79M shares closing down at $78.09 per share with a loss of (+2.97%) and General Electric Co in soft trading moved 25.89M shares, closing down at $25.14 per share with a gain of (+1.00%).

The NASDAQ rallied and closed strong at 4,983.84 with a gain of (+36.22/+0.75%).

The S&P 500 also closed up at 2,096.99 for a gain of (+8.51/+0.41%).

World Markets

The ten most watched world markets including the S&P500, NASDAQ and Canada's S&P TSX Composite and the most watched European Markets, CAC 40 of France, London's FTSE 100, Germany's DAX, Mexico's IPC and the SENEX of India, Asian's Shanghai Composite, Hong Kong Hang Seng all closed up. Japan's Nikkei 225, the only holdout among the top ten global markets, closed down.

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei 225, the only hold out in the ten most watched global markets, closed the trading week down with double digit losses, at 17,913.36 for a loss of (-66.36/-0.37%). 

Gainers for the week include Screen Holdings Co. Ltd (+32.00/+4.31%), Credit Saison Co Ltd (+90.00/+4.26%), Shinsei Bank, Ltd  (+8.00/+3.72%), Sumco Corp (+75.00/+3.62%).

Losers include Citzen Holding Co Ltd (-105.00/-10.76%), Sapporo Holdings Ltd (-39.00/-7.72%), Kirin Holdings Co Ltd (-88.00/-5.40%) and IHI Corp (-24.00/-4.40%).

Active on the Nikkei include Mizuho Financial Group Inc, in a ninth straight week of strong trading, moved 147.40M shares and closed up at ¥203.30 for a gain of (+0.44%), Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group Inc in medium trading moved 77.35M shares to close up at ¥707.80 (+0.83%) and Hitachi Ltd in medium trading moved 41.43M shares to close even at  ¥54.00 and Shinsei Bnk, Ltd moved 35.86M shares in medium trading to close up at ¥223.00 for a gain of (+3.72%).

FTSE 100

London Markets rebounded steadily throughout the week ending with a solid double digit gains to close up at 6873.52 with a gain of (+45.41/-0.67%).

Gainers in the FTSE 100 include Tullow Oil PLC (+19.30/+5.01%), BHP Billiton PLC (+74.13/+4.96%), GlaxoSmith Kline PLC (+69.00/+4.64%), BG Group PLC (+41.60/+4.45%).

Losers include ARM Holdings PLC (-26.23/-2.42%), BT Group PLC (-10.45/-2.32%), Ashstead Group PLC (-25.36/-2.31%) and Carnival PLC (-64.00/-2.16%).

Active on the FTSE 100 included Lloyds Banking Group PLC moving 114.90M shares in strong trading recovered to close up at €75.52 for a gain of (+1.46%), Vodafone Group PLC, in light trading moved 27.29M shares to close up at €232.70 per share for a gain of (+0.61%), Barclays, in medium trading moved 31.66M shares to close up at €257.15 per share for gain of (+1.50%).

Hang Seng Index

The Hang Sang Index rebounded strongly over the past week closing up with solid triple digits gains.

The Hang Seng closed up at 24,682.54 with double digit gains of (+260.39/+1.07%).

Gainers on the Hang Seng Index include Galaxy Entertainment Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (+1.70/+4.07%), Sands China Ltd (Hong Kong) (+1.30/+3.47%), Belle International Holdings Ltd (+0.30/3.56%), Cheung China Resources Land Ltd  (Hong Kong) (+0.63/+3.21%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of China Ltd moving, in intense trading for the ninth consecutive week, 150.36M shares rebounded and closed up HK$4.39 (+1.15%), Industrial and Bank of China Corp also in intense trading moved 152.36M shares closing up at HDK$4.39 up (+1.15%), and CNOOC Ltd in moderate trading moved 73.88M shares to close down at HK$10.92 for a gain of (+1.87%).

Losers for the week include Lenovo Group Ltd (Hong Kong) (-0.18/-1.47), Power Assets Holdings Ltd (-1.10/-1.39%), Bank of East Asia, Ltd (-0.45/-1.39%), Hong Kong and China Gas Co Ltd (-0.06/-0.35%).
