Presenting himself as capable of settling the Ukrainian conflict in one day, Donald Trump is nevertheless faced with a complex diplomatic situation where North American, European, Chinese, Ukrainian and Russian interests face and oppose each other.

The newly elected president is left with wrangling foreign leaders, who like all players on the world stage, is the devil they know, hence the need to initiate an international transformation against the character's use.

To use a physical semantics, one could potentially qualify the election of Donald Trump as a particle accelerator on a geopolitical scale, at least that is how he implicitly presented himself. For example, he who boasted during his election campaign that he was settling the Ukrainian issue in one day is expected to be awaited by Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelensky.

While the former expects the new occupant of the White House to reach a settlement that ratifies the conquered territories as definitively Russian, the latter hopes for a quick settlement of the conflict that would result in the least possible loss of Ukrainian territory.

Vision and Manichaeism

Two different aspirations but which would have the characteristic, depending on the option chosen by Donald Trump, of giving the colour of his mandate in terms of foreign affairs. If he were to give  Vladimir Putin a discharge, Western Europe and the whole world would easily understand which side the vision of the former and new US presidents on international relations leans, understand: "The war is over, the United States has fulfilled its duty of assistance in due time and now wants to stay away from any conflict that could lead to a crisis.  directly or indirectly, engage it in any way whatsoever."

Otherwise, the answer would be more sympathetic to the Europeans and would suggest that the United States of Donald Trump would still be interested and concerned about the fate of Europe. The real estate tycoon's Manichaeism, which still frightens many of his opponents, could however be balanced by a more tense geopolitical reality.

Diplomatic Front

Vladimir Putin's aims and unpredictability remain threats to the world order, as the example of the North Korean troops who came to lend a hand to Russian troops proves this (aggravating the diplomatic front that has been open for years between North Korea and the United States).

However, a deterioration in international relations in a mediocre global economic context in which the United States, like the European Union, is in competition with China could push Donald Trump to lean more towards the Volodymyr Zelensky option than the Vladimir Putin solution, which would cut him off even more from the European ally and further destabilize the eponymous continent.

Thus, by presenting himself as a warmonger ready for anything, Donald Trump finds himself, even more than in 2017 during his first term, facing a thorny diplomatic situation that will have to be tamed not with cowboy lasso but with fine and measured negotiations. All that Donald Trump is not but a virtue to which he will have to comply because in this matter, populism and demagoguery are totally useless, even counterproductive.
