Beltway Insider: Democrats Sworn into Second Term; Gun Control Demands Gain Support

Barack Hussein Obama and Joseph Robinette Biden, in a ceremony witnessed by over 20million viewers, were sworn into second terms, this week, as the 44th President and Vice President of the United States of America.

According to Gallup, President Obama’s job approval, over the past week, again rose three percentage points, to 51% of those polled approve of his effectiveness as President and those who disapprove of his effectiveness as President dropped by three percentages point to 42%.

The Inauguration, held on Martin Luther King Day, echoed of the same Faith in America’s Future theme resonated throughout the campaign.  Vice President Joseph Biden, and President Obama took the oaths from Supreme Court Justices Sonia Sotomayor and Chief Justice John Roberts respectively. It was the first time a female justice and a Hispanic had administered the oath of office.

The ceremony lead by Chairman of the Inaugural Committee, New York Senator Charles Schumer, included an Invocation delivered by Myrlie Evers-Williams the wife of Slain Civil Rights leader Medger Evers, music by Grammy Award winners James Taylor, a long-time friend and supporter of the president, Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, and The Brooklyn Tabernacle Choir with poetry by Richard Blanco. The ceremony ended with a benediction by Reverend Dr. Luis Leon.

President Obama addressed the nation, eloquently, restating values that he passionately holds and believes. Although his television audience was considerably less than the 38million who witness history in 2009, his passion for equality, a country free from discriminations, for remembering those who walked before us who gave so that we could live freely, and so that we, as a nation could prosper and live free from tyranny, from oppression from within and enemies outside our borders, was clear and met with swells of thunderous applause from the almost one million visitors who lined the Mall to witness history.

President Obama spoke of equality free from gender determinations, circumstance of birth or definition. He also spoke of the current state of America, unemployment, small shifts and hopes of larger gains, the economy, and Sandy Hook. He added, “We will not apologize for our way of life nor will we waver in its defense. And for those who seek to advance their aims by inducing terror and slaughtering innocents, we say to you now that, "Our spirit is stronger and cannot be broken. You cannot outlast us, and we will defeat you." And that statement goes for all enemies foreign or domestic. Challenge our way of life, our freedom, our Constitution and you will meet your end.

Gun Control Demands Gain Support

In the month since twenty children and six adults were massacred at Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the procession of miniature caskets filled the evening news, the fervor over gun control has yet to die.

Throughout this past week, One Million Moms For Gun Control descended on Washington, led by a coalition of Newtown residents holding signs of the 26, bearing names of slain children, and vowing to “Never Forget.” One Million Moms For Gun Control also marched in New York City demanding a complete ban on assault weapons.

Vice President Biden delivered and President Obama signed 23 Executive Orders and the nation applauded those actions. Unfortunately, it is not enough. While the mandates bring the issues of gun control to the forefront of the American consciousness, it is a far cry from Gun Control, from Banning Assault weapons.

There will be no data received from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study, a much needed study into the motivation, mental, socio-economic, nurture or nature of violence, which will reverse the beliefs or convections that guns kill and stop the demands for a complete ban on assault weapons.

In the few short weeks since the halls of Sandy Hook were filled with the blood of the innocent, politicians, business leaders, citizens, demanded changes to ensure another Sandy Hook, or Virginia Tech or Aurora or Columbine will not happen again.
