Description: For more than 50 years, the showgirl was an iconic symbol of Las Vegas. Extravagant stage productions featuring showgirls arrived on the Strip in the late 1950s, overshadowing the underworld figures who built and secretly operated the city's casinos. With their revealing and rhinestone-studded costumes, showgirls represented the glamorous energy of Las Vegas. As the culture—and Las Vegas—changed, the showgirl era came to an end. Three former showgirls will return to the stage alongside UNLV's Head of Public Services in Special Collections and Archives, Su Kim Chung, to look back on their careers and their lives in bygone Las Vegas.
Speakers:
- Dawnie Sachs is a Las Vegas–based casino marketing executive and former professional dancer who performed as a lead and company manager at the iconic Lido de Paris. She later founded her own casino marketing company and has worked closely with major brands, including Caesars Entertainment, Wynn/Encore, Foxwoods Resort and notable cruise lines, helping launch landmark entertainment such as Celine Dion's residency at Caesars Palace.
- Diane Christiansen is a veteran actress, dancer and award-winning acting coach whose five-decade career spans film, television and stage, mentoring top Hollywood talent, Oscar nominees and Emmy Award winners. A published author of "The Last Real Showgirl: My Sequined '70s Onstage" and "Scenes for Teens, By Teens" as well as the founder of the Christiansen Acting Academy, she has been repeatedly recognized as one of Hollywood's top acting coaches and has contributed to productions across major TV series and networks.
- Teri Thorndike is a longtime Las Vegas performer and producer whose career began in 1970, spanning roles as a showgirl, line captain, choreographer and director in iconic productions, including "Folies Bergere," "Casino de Paris" and "Moulin Rouge" in Paris. She continues to create and perform in lounge shows across Las Vegas, most recently appearing as a legendary showgirl in "Follies" and performing in Chris Childers' "Circus Freaks" in 2026.

ABOUT THE UNDERGROUND
The Underground is an immersive Prohibition history exhibition featuring a speakeasy, distillery and private VIP room in the basement of The Mob Museum, the National Museum of Organized Crime and Law Enforcement. Artifacts from the 1920s and 1930s tell the intriguing story of the Prohibition era, which not only saw a proliferation of bootlegged booze and the meteoric growth of organized crime outfits but also had a profound, lasting impact on society, specifically making way for modern cocktail culture. A seasonal cocktail menu gives guests the opportunity to try contemporary takes on classic Prohibition-era cocktails. The menu and atmosphere have landed the speakeasy on several "best cocktail bars in Las Vegas" lists. Distillery tastings allow participants to learn about Prohibition and its impact on a variety of spirits and drinking habits while tasting a few of the Museum's moonshines.
