Twisters Review – Entertaining Sequel Delivers Fast Action, Big Thrills

Twisters, from Warner Bros. and Amblin Entertainment, brings to the screen a super-sized summer thrill ride as tornado alley crackles with intensity and mesmerized storm chasers willing to risk everything to understand nature’s fury follow with abandon.

The film begins with a wide-sweeping horizon of open green fields, dotted with farmhouses, and barns, and it is early in the morning of a very active storm season, and the conditions appear right for the possibility of a small EF1 developing.

Faye Review – Intimate Portrait of Hollywood Legend is a Must See

The team led by Kate, played by Daisy Edgar-Jones, is in the front vehicle with Jeb, played by Daryl McCormack, Addy, played by Kiernan Shipka, and Praveen, played by Nik Dodani, with Javi, played by Anthony Ramos, in the second vehicle. They are testing the concept of dismantling the core of the storm through chemical interruption, and their equations are based on the velocity and precipitation associated with an EF1. By the time the storm develops, and the chemicals are released, it has escalated into an EF5. The chemicals did little to interrupt the strength of the storm.

Even as storm chasing is their passion, the point of no return arrives, and they understand they will be killed if they don’t find shelter. Even though a highway underpass is the worst place to seek shelter in a tornado, the team is left with no choice, and they try to make it to the top, the wind is just too strong, and one by one the team is picked up by the storm and killed, except for Kate and Javi. When the tornado passes, she is the lone survivor.

The story picks up five years later. Kate is in Manhattan working at the National Weather Service, tracking storms across the country from the safety of a cubicle. On this day a guest arrives to visit, it is Javi. We are quickly caught up on his last five years, as he explains after the storm, he joined the military and was introduced to advanced tracking technology which allowed him to develop his storm-chasing company. He asks her to come and join them, just for one week.

Sorry/Not Sorry Review – Doc Unpacks The Shocking Fall of Louis C.K.

She turns him down, and then reconsiders. This moves the film into the second act. Suddenly, thanks to social media, storm chasing has become a circus with experts, amateurs, and even tourists, and every nut with a weather app, following the caravans across the open plains of tornado alley hoping for that selfie that explodes and can harness the Insta fame game.

This is when we meet Tyler, played by Glen Powell, who seems, at first, to be another influencer who has somehow struck a vein on social media and mixed risk and daredevil antics to gather an audience of loyal followers. On this day, he is joined by his team, a ragtag band of experienced experts, each who have a skill set that complements his meteorological expertise and showboat style.

As each of these teams, Javi’s Storm Par and Tyler’s Tornado Rangler’s are trying to outmaneuver the other for the best images, action, and data from this over-active storm season, Kate is in the middle torn between the memories of the past, and her hope of finding a way to either pre-warn residents or dissipate the tornado’s force.
