Mission Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, from Paramount Pictures, the IMF super spy team as they fight global terror across several continents, determined to stop the sale of an advanced technology, that will give the owner world domination.
Dead Reckoning begins under the waters of the Antarctic where the most advanced Russian submarine on the Kremlin's fleet has been stealthy making its way through international waters invading European boundaries undetected. We see the dual keys necessary to activate this cloaking mechanism that renders the submarine undetectable. With the mission a success the submarine commander announces they are heading home.

The sub's radar suddenly detects a submarine preparing to engage. The escalation continues with torpedo tanks flooded, torpedoes loaded, defensive maneuvers released, the countdown to impact begins. The Russian commander watched as the torpedo sails through the waters counting down to impact when the threat on the radar screen disappears. Advanced technology has somehow failed or has it?
Suddenly the screen shows the released Russian torpedo turning and homing in on the Russian sub; the countdown begins, the crew desperately tries to deactivate. Implosion. The next scene we see the bodies floating up stopped from surfacing by the frozen ocean, and the two keys to the world's most advanced technology, float still around the necks of the crewmembers.
The film jumps to a darkened warehouse where a man announces, "food delivery." He walks slowly into the empty building, a voice in the darkness, which the audiences recognizes as Ethan Hunt, played by Tom Cruise, he walks out of the shadow and at this point we are unsure which direction this scene is going, when Hunt asks him the codes. Then we understand, the food delivery guy is one of the newest IMF recruits and is struggling with protocol on his first day.

Hunt opens the package and his assignment, should he choose to accept, is inside. We see, Ilsa, played by Rebecca Ferguson, disavowed MI6, has found one of the keys and is hiding in the Arabian desert. She is shopping on the black market for a buyer, which includes the usual suspects including The White Widow, played by Vanessa Kirby. The bounty on her head is $50 million.
The film jumps to the Arabian desert, where Hunt is hiding behind a sand dune, and a group of killers are heading to her hideout. He manages to flash her a coded signal. Loyal to her and determined to rescue her he makes it to the hideout. We see she is still an expert marksman and begins to pick off the approaching bounty hunters.
Once Ethan arrives, between the two they neutralize any remaining assassins, and he explains as they set the scene which has it appear the Ilsa has been killed, what will happen next.
The film then jumps to Washington, DC, where a meeting of the highest level of U.S. security personnel are meeting. Leading the meeting is Denlinger, played by Cary Elwes. Also present in the meeting is Kittridge, played by Henry Czerny, and several others who attempt to explain to the director, in total transparency, the concept of the IMF team.
We also see man with dead eyes, walking with a briefcase. He passes several security checkpoints without issue. The man with the dead eyes enters the room and hands Kittridge a box. He tosses several instantly sedating smokers onto the floor. Only he and Kittridge remain conscious.

The film then jumps to Rome. At the airport Hunt and his team, Luther Stickell, played by Ving Rhames, and Benji Dunn, played by Simon Pegg, are using facial recognition and heat censored body scans to find the passenger who has one of the keys, and is carrying a thumb drive with $4 million in crypto currency.
As Hunt is on the front lines, his team operate on a need-to-know basis and unless it will really distract him from the task at hand don't divulge the encounters they run into. Which is where we meet Grace, played by Haley Atwell, a super thief, who bumps into the buyer, lifts the key, and without notice makes away with the money and the key.
Also at the airport is a ghost from Ethan's past, Gabriel, played by Esai Morales, who flashes in front of him. Is it in Ethan's mind?

Filled with tricks, stunts, and more over the top action than any of the previous MI films, even the introduction of the newest IMF team members is handled seamlessly.
The cast, which reunites many of the MI team from previous films and introduces new characters, work together as a fine-tuned machine. They remain true to their character. Of course, it wouldn't be a Mission Impossible film without movie magic which is the very reason audiences' step into the theater and allow themselves to be transported into this other world experience.
