Prince Harry and Meghan Markle Announce Birth of Daughter

Prince Harry and Meghan, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, announced the birth of their daughter, Lilibet Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on Friday. She is the second child for the couple and eighth in line to the British throne.

Her name pays tribute to Queen Elizabeth II whom her family called Lilibet and Prince Harry's late mother, Diana, The Princess of Wales who died in a car crash in 1997. The baby girl will be known as "Lili" for short.

At the news of the birth social media lit up with well-wishers including personal messages from The Royal Family, "Congratulations to The Duke and Duchess of Sussex on the birth of Lilibet Diana! The Queen, The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall and The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted with the news. Lilibet is Her Majesty's 11th great-grandchild."

And from the Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, Congratulations to Harry, Meghan, Archie on the arrival of baby Lilibet Diana."

And Prince Harry's brother, The Duke of Cambridge and his wife, Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge official Twitter account, "We are all delighted by the happy news of the arrival of baby Lili. Congratulations to Harry, Meghan and Archie."

"Harry and Meghan said they were "blessed" by the arrival of their second child. "She is more than we could have ever imagined," they wrote, "and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we've felt from across the globe." Mother and baby are "healthy and well" and adjusting to life at home, they said," reported The Washington Post.

The child's name was viewed by many as a peace offering, as the Sussex's have had a tumultuous year filled with a deepening divide as Harry and Meghan spoke openly regarding their mental health challenges and feelings of desperation.

The revelation of personal and intimate insider information was not celebrated and the two found themselves drifting further. The recent death of Prince Philip brought Harry back to the palace and from appearances looked as if bridges were mending.

Prince Harry and Meghan, who married in 2018, shocked many by announcing their decision, in 2020 to step away from the Royal Family and move to America where they could forge a life for themselves. The separation was surprisingly intense.

Harry and Meghan make their home in Santa Barbara, California, with their son, Archie.
