The Mongoose, from Samuel Goldwyn Films, brings to the screen an ode to America's unsung veteran heroes who create an underground network of assistors, as one of their own becomes ensnared in a cross-country police chase.
The film begins with Ryan 'Fang' Flannagan, played by Liam Neeson, behind the wheel of souped up Ford Mustang Shelby Super Snake, American muscle. Except for his AI assistant, Helene, he is alone. In the rearview, a line of police cruisers are tailing him. We see a self-applied tourniquet on his leg stained with blood.
Wildwood Review – An Epic Adventure, Stunning, A Must See
The Mustang is unstoppable, and corners like its on rails, we see the quick hairpin turns, and pedal to the metal speed, as Fang weaves in and out of the cruisers who are unable to out maneuver him.
As the Shelby Super Snake is state of the art, the newest model, the AI assistant is equipped to handle incoming calls. Fang, who is driving like a bat out of hell has crossed the Arkansas state border and is telephoned in the car by the Arkansas State Police Major James Tilton, played by Maurice Marvel Meredith, who has a firm, but friendly, conversation explaining that it is time that this cross-country adventure ends.
Fang begins to test the limits of the Shelby's AI assistant skills, with random and obscure requests and sending emails, and throughout these moments we see the Shelby is also an automobile assistant, notifying the driver of roadblocks, efficient directions, speed, and gas levels.

Carrie Review - Stephen King Adaptation Delivers Again
The film moves from the Shelby voice over and Fang's determination to outrun the law, to the moments that led up to this chase. We begin to understand that Fang, a distinguished decorated veteran who served three tours in Afghanistan, had reentry problems after his honorable discharge.
We also find out he was held in an Afghan POW camp, where one man in his unit died. The others, Tank, played by Ving Rhames, and Pilot, played by Craig Hosking, gathered annually to celebrate Wiz, played by Ryan Morgan, and remember the other fallen heroes.
In flashbacks, we meet Tara, played by Marisa Tomei. She is desperate to have her husband back before war and PTSD made it impossible for him to sleep without recurring images of the POW camp, of death, and before triggers sent him flying into rage. Finally tired of trying she asks for a divorce.

Which is when the story begins to come together, with Fang and Tara, still on speaking terms, she is in the hospital. Her new relationship, a decorated local police officer, Todd, played by Brett Tucker, has an insidious, evil habit of domestic violence. She wants to move her stuff from the house, and as everyone in her circle is busy, Fang volunteers to go to the house alone. She protests, but he assures her, everything will be fine.
Just as he is nearly finished, Todd arrives and is armed. They fight, Fang is shot, and they go over the second story railing. This ushers in the explosive and surprising final act.
An engrossing film, The Mongoose delivers fast action, and an entertaining suspenseful cross-country car chase, while showcasing the advances in modern American muscle cars.
The ensemble cast each give the top level performances audiences have come to expect, and for those actors who are unknown to audiences they each play an integral and memorable part in the story.
An American veterans drama, The Mongoose pays homage to those relationships built and forged in the fires of war, and shows that while the location may have changed the bonds are never broken.
Engaging, interesting, with a realistic, authentic story, coupled with high speed driving behind the wheel of a new souped up smart car. The Mongoose is playing exclusively in theaters. See it.
