Thelma The Unicorn Review – Netflix Animated Feature Delivers Big Fun

Thelma The Unicorn, a Netflix original, delivers a magical adventure, as a regular farm pony with big talent, through a twist of fate, finds herself living her wildest dreams, in an against all odds story of triumph.

The film begins with The Rusty Buckets, a trio of barnyard animals, a miniature farm pony, Thelma, voiced by Brittany Howard, and two donkeys, one on bass, Otis, voiced by Will Forte, and the other, Reggie, on drums, voiced by Jon Heder. The crowd is going wild, the trio is kicking up a sick beat and the lead Thelma has the audience screaming. Suddenly she is running off the stage, she hits air and begins to surf the crowd to roars of applause.

Instantly, she hits a bale of hay, and the imaginary moment she has visualized disappears. It provides enough mental fuel to get her through her day as barnyard pony hauling manure. Suddenly the show horses, steeds, hands high, with long flowing manes, muscular frames, are at the gate laughing as Thelma shakes off the garbage.

As they take the stage for the big audition, Thelma hesitates and as she walks on, before she has a chance to preform, the judges stop her and harshly attempt to destroy her, telling her she hasn't got "it," and with those few simple words, like daggers they impale her, and she is devastated. Her bass player, Otis, meets up with her and tries to cheer her up. He brings out a game he is developing, where the underdog always conquers, and a wild, pink, and white unicorn in rearing stance, Thelma is mesmerized by the beauty.

The next day, with dreams of headlining Sparklepalooza evaporated, she is back to hauling the dung of other people, when she finds a carrot on the ground, still entranced by the unicorn statue, she affixes it to her forehead and realizes she looks like a unicorn, a small, miniature unicorn, but, hey it could work. Just at that moment a truck hits a major pothole and his cargo, pink paint, and glittery sparkles spill over and in a life-changing instance splash Thelma, and instantly her new look finds her.

 

A family is traveling down the out of the way dirt road when they stop, amazed by the incredible sight, a real unicorn! The child, a girl in a wheelchair, calls out to Thelma, delighted to have the chance of a lifetime, a see a real unicorn. So, Thelma, understanding both the moment and the importance of allowing the child to believe in the impossible, even if only for a minute, tells her that she is a unicorn, and of course you can take my picture and yes, I do have special gifts, I sing.
