LA Arts: Morrison Hotel Gallery Heats Up Jazz Appreciation Month with Jazz: The Birth of Cool Exhibition

From the intense soul of Miles Davis to the effortless charm of Sarah Vaughan, Morrison Hotel Gallery is pleased to showcase the luminaries of jazz music with Jazz: The Birth of Cool, an invitation-only exhibition opening Thursday, April 25th

The exhibit will be open to the public in all 3 locations, in NYC, L.A., and Maui, beginning April 26th.

Featuring jazz icons such as Art Blakey (pouring it all out onstage in a photograph by Herman Leonard) and The Rat Pack demonstrating their signature cool in a shot acquired from the Frank Sinatra Estate and more, this exhibit highlights the work of photographers including: Glen Craig, Don Hunstein, Art Kane, Herman Leonard, Ken Regan, Joseph A. Rosen, Timothy White, Leigh Wiener and Francis Wolff.

At the NYC gallery, in SoHo, there will be an intimate, invite-only opening on the night of the 25th, from 7 to 9 PM, with special guest Michael Cuscuna, jazz musician and leading discographer at Blue Note Records. The Francis Wolff - Blue Note Box Set: John Coltrane's Blues Train will also be on sale during the exhibit and reception.

Dreamscape Immersive Review - Thrilling and Amazing VR Adventure

In Maui, at the gallery's location inside Mick Fleetwood's General Store, there will be an opening reception for the exhibit, from 7 to 10 PM.

The L.A. gallery, located in the lobby of the luxurious Sunset Marquis in West Hollywood, will celebrate Jazz: The Birth of Cool with an opening reception from 7 to 10 PM on Thursday, April 25th. Bar 1200 will bring true jazz essence to the party with an apropos selection of cocktails ranging from the spirit-raising "French 75" to the timeless "Sidecar."

The Charles Ruggiero Jazz Trio will play at Bar 1200 starting at 8 p.m. Band leader Ruggiero kicked off his career playing with a lineup of NYC jazz masters in the 90s before following in his father's footsteps and joining Chuck Mangione.

Currently, he lives in L.A., where he tours and works with some of the greatest musical minds in the jazz and rock community. Seating for the reception will be limited, so guests are encouraged to arrive early.

Georgia and The Vintage Youth - A Jazzy, Big Band, Sound is Crossing the Pond

At all three gallery locations, attendees will have the opportunity to purchase exclusive items commemorating this special exhibit.

Among them are deluxe copies of Art Kane. Harlem 1958, the extraordinary monograph envisioned by Jonathan Kane (Art's son), Quincy Jones, and Benny Golson commemorating the historic date when photography legend Art Kane gathered 57 jazz icons in Harlem for his first professional shoot for Esquire magazine. Each copy of the book will include a signed and numbered limited edition fine art print and commemorative poster.

There will also be a selection of signed books available by jazz photography phenom Herman Leonard. The autographed books offer a chance for jazz fans to take home a piece of jazz music history.

"I am very excited about this particular exhibition," said Casey Fannin-Kaplan, L.A. Gallery Director. "What better way to celebrate Jazz Appreciation Month than showcasing the extraordinary heritage and history of all the jazz giants through photography. We represent photographers that not only documented the jazz scene in the 1940s, 50s, and 60s, but told a story through their lens that no one else was telling. Some of these legendary photographers include Herman Leonard, Francis Wolff, and Don Hunstein."

SF Arts: San Francisco Stern Grove Outdoor Music Festival Prepares for 2019 Season

The exhibition is one of many celebrations being held in April to honor Jazz Appreciation Month. The 2019 Jazz at Lincoln Center Gala, "The Birth of Jazz: From Bolden to Armstrong," will highlight the rich jazz culture and history of New Orleans - the birthplace of jazz. In the Crescent City itself, the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival kicks off on April 26th and runs through May 5th.
