Swiss Forensic Specialist ID Frozen Couple

Two mummified bodies, well preserved and intact, were identified by Swiss forensic specialist as that of a husband and wife who disappeared nearly 75 years ago after telling their children they were going to feed the animals.

Marceline Udry-Dumoulin, 79, the only living child of the couple, identified as Marcelin Dumoulin and his wife, Francine, who were 40 and 37 at the time of their disappearance, was four when her parents left for what should have been a few hours.

Filling in the blanks of that fateful day, she indicated her parents, he a shoe maker and she a teacher, had gone out on August 15, 1942, to milk cows in a meadow near Chandolin, Switzerland, in the Valais canton. The hike up the mountain began at 6,352 ft. and the bodies were found nearing the 8,580 ft. mark at the base of a Ski lift operated by the Glacier 3000 company.

Authorities have pieced together a scenario that seems to fit the evidence gathered and examined by the forensic specialists.

The couple, who were found very close together, were fully clothed in garments that fit the time frame of World War II. The artifacts they had with them were also well preserved. Specialists believe they fell into a crevasse on the glacier where, like the ocean, they stayed for decades before the glacier receded and the bodies became viable.

Udry-Dumoulin recalled "It was the first time her mother had gone with him on the excursion. She was always pregnant and couldn't climb in the difficult conditions of a glacier."

After the loss of her parents, her childhood was disrupted, she went to live with an aunt, the other six siblings were placed in families. She has said, she and her seven siblings, spent their lives searching, hoping to find them and one day give them the burial they deserved.

After some time the idea that they would return alive had diminished but hope never died. "For the funeral, I won't wear black. I think white would be more appropriate. It represents hope which I never lost," she said.
