World News: Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Intensifies

As the Israeli-Palestinian conflict drags on in a never-ending confrontation, the question arises of the legitimacy of two peoples with similar rights, that of living in peace in their own independent states free from threats of violence.

While a very certain Israeli ground military operation is being prepared to invade the Gaza Strip to eradicate, according to the Hebrew authorities, Hamas once and for all, the question of reviving the peace process nevertheless arises.

Articulated around the idea that each of the two peoples, Palestinians and Israelis can live on the same land that has been shared, this process now seems to be at an impasse. What for? Because when two legitimates confront each other, two solutions are available to them. Either the party of tension and war, which is the case to date; or the party of compromise, which was the case in the nineties with the Camp David Accords signed in 1993 (themselves following the 1979 Accords).

To date, Gaza, which has become the epicenter of all the tensions and resentments that the Israeli-Palestinian conflict has generated, has also become the space that highlights the inertia of the Westerners, especially the United States and the European Union, both of which have allowed Israel and the Palestinian authorities to get bogged down in a multitude of diplomatic and political mistakes for years.

Gazans in a Vice

Betting on the gradual disappearance of the Palestinian geographical entity, the West allowed the Israeli colonization process in the occupied territories to continue while turning a blind eye to the powder keg that Gaza was becoming. Abandoned, abandoned, in the hands of Hamas since 2007, the Gaza Strip could only become the haunt of blind terrorism, the consequences of which are suffered by Israel and, by way of ricochets, the Gazans caught between Hamas and the Jewish State.

Among the solutions that are being posed today, the only one that is valid to date is, despite Israel's legitimate historical claims, to grant the Palestinians a land that will be a state in the political, administrative, and cultural sense of the term. For granting the Palestinians a territory does not mean denying the existence of Israel, or even engaging in a logic of reduction of its original space, it is a recognition of the political and cultural existence of a people with legitimate and respectable aspirations.

Trade-offs and Symbols

Opting for a compromise solution does not mean sending today's adversaries back-to-back to feed the resentments of future generations, it is giving priority to peace for the benefit of two peoples in the light of the moral developments of the century. Thinking of Palestine as it was in 1948, when Israel was created, may no longer make sense today.

On the other hand, agreeing to share a thousand-year-old land, charged as much with history as with symbols, would constitute a key step in local geopolitics but not only. It could also inspire other hotbeds of tension to rethink their relationship with others.

And if recent declarations (Joe Biden reaffirming his support for Israel, Emmanuel Macron confirming his intention to fight Islamic terrorism while acknowledging the need to create a Palestinian state) tend towards appeasement and the resumption of the peace process, the conflict seems to be sinking into an absolute logic of destruction or even eradication of Gaza.
