Lew Hendler, Scunci Co-Founder, Launches New Skin Care Venture

Lew Hendler, world renowned co-founder of the mega successful woman’s hair care company, scunci, recently launched Michael Todd true organics and with that single handedly changed the face of skin care.

Hendler, the founder of Michael Todd true organics, agreed to a phone interview from his office in Philadelphia, which began with him trying to quiet his dog, who was barking in the background, while explaining that he doesn’t take too well to “other voices.”

Never having met him, Hendler seems satisfied with life, he’ll be 62 in July, and his photo shows a man happy, attractive, with smooth clear skin, a testament he stated, “to the power of true organics.”

If there were a single linear linkage to each of Hendler’s projects, it would be the success of each of them. He has the golden touch, like crossing stones on a pond he seamlessly moved from successful Philadelphia lawyer, to co-founder and driving force behind the mega successful scunci, the number one ponytail holder in the world which, by the way, sold for an astronomical sum.

As our interview focused on the questions forwarded, we spoke of how he became involved with scunci, his new venture Michael Todd true organics, and why his products are made in America. Of the many things interesting about him, his attention to detail and expansive beauty knowledge stood out as he discussed each aspect of his new venture. It became evident that he knew more about skin care than most and was willing to learn more to make this venture and product a success.

Hendler, when speaking about scunci, explains that they were originally a client of his law firm. To make a long story short, they approached him to be a part of their company and he agreed. By 2000, scunci was #1 in market share and by 2005 they were made “an offer they couldn’t refuse.”

After a few years of active retirement, Hendler became aware of a fledging internet based cosmetics company by the name of Michael Todd, which soon became his newest venture. Hendler discontinued the Company’s colour cosmetics business focusing instead on the growing trend in organic skincare and in the process renamed the company Michael Todd true organics, reflecting the company’s mission.

Hendler speaks openly about his dedication to skin care, “I have a passion for this type of product. My skin care products are the “free range chicken” and “line caught salmon” of the skin care world. He went on to explain how he decided on the product assortments: washes and scrubs, toners, moisturizers, serums and masks “all tailored to specific skin types. One size fits all just doesn’t work,” according to Hendler

He talked about his guiding principles and the difference between natural and organic, “We try to use as much organic derived ingredients as possible.” Organic, of course, meaning, plants and fruits grown without chemical pesticides, genetically modified organisms or processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or chemical food additives. According to Hendler “Your skin is the largest organ in your body and what you put on your skin matters. You’ll recognize the ingredients we use, ingredients like cranberries, oranges, pumpkin and coconut and oils from olives, coconuts and jojoba and mango and shea butters.”

Hendler goes on to say, “True organicsare about honesty. Many skin care brands claim to be natural or organic but use very little of these ingredients. We use independently verified USDA approved certifiers under the U.S.  National Organic program and state the percentage of organically grown plants and fruits used on every product so you know just what you’re getting.”

We also never “water down” our products. Hendler explains, “Instead of water, the company uses a soothing gel gathered from Aloe Vera plants… and, we never, ever, use parabens, triclosans, sulfates, phthalates, synthetic dyes or fragrances, mineral oil or other petrochemicals to avoid health concerns.”

The company has recently generated some controversy with the launch of a unique anti-aging facelift formulation using snail serum called KNU (pronounced, new you). Billed as a miracle serum, Botox in a jar, Hendler explains, “people don’t realize that snail serum is a South American beauty secret well known for its healing and restorative qualities. We have blended the snail serum with stem cells, peptides, Matryxl 3000 and other proprietary ingredients to achieve a formulation that provides an immediate lift and tightening while it continues to improve the skin with continued use.

As aware of the economy as he is of skin care, we ended our interview with a simple question of ‘why he decided to make his products in the USA?’ Hendler stated, “Manufacturing today is about 12% of the U.S. economy and it employs about 11% percent of the people. With the recession we’ve gone through and hearing the President’s emphasis on the need to bring manufacturing jobs home, I felt it was worth the extra cost to make my product here in the United States. In addition to improved quality control, it just seemed like, and I know this sounds a little bit corny, but it seemed like the right thing to do. It’s just that simple.”

And honestly, so is beautiful skin!
