US Markets Struggle; World Markets Fall Sharply

The Dow Jones Industrial struggled throughout the week, laboring as the market limped along throughout the first full week in August cooling the New York Stock Exchange as the DOW attempted to stay above the mid 16,000.

 

Surging Monday, the DOW fell rapidly throughout the remainder of the week, barely peaking above the 16,498.51 opening and still closed the week at 16,553.93 for a net gain of +185.66/+1.83%.

Big winners for the week include Mercadolibre Inc (+13.41/+14.51%) trading with a closing price of $105.85 per share, Air Methods Corp (+6.62/+12.45%) closing at $59.81 per share, HMS Holdings Corp at $20.74 per share up +2.18/11.75%, Tornier NV at $21.73 per share up +2.24/+11.49%.

Losers include Discovery Communications (-40.31/-48.39%), Hibbett Sports Inc (-5.29/-10.57%).

Active on the DOW include Zynga Inc moved 85.04M shares in heavy trading for a net loss of 1.37%, Sirius XM Holdings moved 67.869M shares in strong trading for a net gain of 2.23%, Apple Inc, in light trading moved 41.87M shares up +0.28% to $94.74 per share and Intel Corp also in light trading moved 35.49M shares for a -0.28% loss to $32.59 per share.

The NASDAQ had a bullish run throughout the week closing at 4370.90 up +35.93/+0.83% with very little fluctuation.

The S&P 500 ran alongside the DOW and NASDAQ, stayed strong and closed up at 1931.59 with a gain of +22.02/+1.15%.

World Markets

Nikkei 225

The Japanese Nikkei never recovered as the market continued in an uncontrollable tailspin, falling sharply throughout the week, never seeing light, the Nikkei closed at its lowest levels in recent weeks and closed the week at 14, 778.37 with a loss of -454.00/-2.98%.  

Big winners for the week include Denki Kagaku Kogy (+9.00/+2.61%), Yokohama Rubber C Ltd (+11.00/+1.25%), Teijin Ltd (+2.00/+0.79%).

Losers include Nisshin Steel Co. Ltd.( -123.00/-9.76%), Nikon (-148.50/-9.38%),  Taiyo Yuden (-96.00/-8.91%),  and Nippon Electric Glass., (-50.00/-8.80%).

Movers on the Nikkei Mizuho Financial Group in heavy trading at 187.89M shares at $193.70 per share for a net loss of -1.58%, Mitsubishi UFJ Financial in strong trading 77.74M shares, at $572.70 per share with a net loss of 3.28% and Unitika Ltd., at $44.00 per share in light trading at 54.54M shares and a net loss of -2.22%.

FTSE 100

London Markets briefly rallied beginning the week at 6714.38, which became a bright spot as the markets mirrored a global tumble and fell throughout the remainder of the week closing at 6567.36 a net loss of -30.01/-0.45%.

Big winners in the FTSE 100 include Hargreaves Lansdown PLC (+34.00/+3.24%), Fresnillo PLC (+31.50/+3.21%), Royal Mail PLC (12.50/+3.02%) and Royal Bank of Scotland (+8.20/2.43%).

Losers include Schroders PLC (-61.00/-2.68%), Smith Group PLC (-32.00/-2.50%), Tullow Oil PLC (-17.50/-2.41%) and BG Group PLC (-27.50/-2.33%).

Active on the FTSE 100 includes Vodafone Group PLC in heavy trading at 116.78M shares, down -2.07% at $191.90 per share, Lloyds Banking Group in traded 94.57M shares at $72.21 in strong trading with a net gain of 0.40% and Barclays PLC selling at$214.20 in light trading at 32.45M, for a net gain of 0.37%.

Hang Seng Index

The Hong Kong Markets began the week just shy of a 52 week range high at 24, 670.71 and by Tuesday trading had peaked and fell throughout the remainder of the week and the Heng Send Index finished the week closing at 24,331.41 with a net loss of -56.15/-0.23%.

Survivors of the Hang Seng Index bloodbath include CNOOC Ltd (+0.24/+1.72%), China Resources Power Holding Co Ltd (+035/+1.57%), China Petroleum & Chemical Corp (+0.09/+1.21%) and PetroChina Co Ltd (+0.12/+1.19%).

Active trading on the Heng Seng Hong Kong Index includes Bank of China at 262.49M shares, down slightly at 3.62 with a net loss of -0.82%, Industrial and Com trading 185.26M shares, down 5.14 with a net loss of -0.39% and China Construction Bank down 5.64 trading 210.20m shares with a loss of -0.69%.

Losers for the week include China Unicom Hong Kong Ltd down (-0.22/-1.72%), Belle International Holdings down (-0.20/-2.07%) and Henderson Land Development Co ltd (-1.40/-2.87).
