Hurricane Threatens GOP Convention; Romney Set to Accept Nom - The Road to the White House - Election 2012 - Week 34

Mitt Romney, the presumptive presidential candidate, spent the week readying the voters of America for his primetime acceptance speech as he stumped across the Midwest.

Romney, who this week will be the chosen Republican Presidential candidate, may end up waiting as approaching Tropical Storm Isaac and severe weather threatens to disrupt his big day.

According the NASA Weather Watch and the National Weather Service, Tropical Storm Isaac is expected to become a Hurricane on Sunday August 26th and has already dumped up to 20 inches of rain across Haiti and the Caribbean.  With sustained winds of 60MPH, the Tropical Storm has been churning its way into the warm Gulf waters and is slowly moving toward Florida and could, if weather models are correct, pass west of Tampa Bay the site of the Republican National Convention sparing the city and expected 50K convention goers a direct hit.

According to Gallup, as of August 25, 2012, Mitt Romney has a two percentage point lead over President Obama. Among registered voters President Obama’s national popularity gained a single percentage point this week to 46% and Mitt Romney’s national popularity dropped a single percentage point to 46%. Entering into the two weeks of Conventions the candidates are tied.

President Obama’s current overall ratings, according to Gallup, gained a single percentage points over the past week to 46% of those polled who approve of his effectiveness as President and those who disapprove of his effectiveness dropped a two percentage point to 47%.

A Better Future is the overall theme of the 2012 Republican National Convention with separate themes of “We Built It,” celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit and Wednesday theme, “We Can Change it” dedicated to showcasing to the American public the strength of the Republican Party message and plan to Bring America back from the brink.  

Headlining the GOP Convention are the short list of once Vice Presidential hopefuls including U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte, of New Hampshire and former New Hampshire Attorney General, Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal, 55th Governor of Louisiana,  Congressman Connie Mack won the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate in Florida on August 14th and was first elected to the United States House of Representatives in November 2004.Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell,  U.S. Senator Rob Portman, of Ohio and Artur Davis, former Alabama congressman from the 7th District. Also speaking are Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey and Senator Marco Rubio of Florida.

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus issued the following statement, “Due to the severe weather reports for the Tampa Bay area, the Republican National Convention will convene on Monday August 27th and immediately recess until Tuesday afternoon, August 28th, exact time to follow.

Our first priority is ensuring the safety of delegates, alternates, guests, members of the media attending the Republican National Convention, and citizens of the Tampa Bay area. RNC Convention officials and the Romney campaign are working closely with state, local and federal officials, as well as the Secret Service, to monitor Tropical Storm Isaac and preserve Florida's emergency management resources. Officials have predicted participants may encounter severe transportation difficulties due to sustained wind and rain.

The Republican National Convention will take place and officially nominate Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan, and the Party has other necessary business it must address. We also are remaining in constant contact with state and federal officials and may make additional schedule alterations as needed.”

The Republican National Convention will take place this week in Tampa Bay, Florida, August 27-30, 2012.

The Democratic National Convention will take place in Charlotte North Carolina, September 3 -6, 2012.
