When it comes to alcohol consumption, people can get their fix in many ways. Between wine, beer and hard liquor, the various brands and types can seem endless. Given the long-standing history of alcohol, it’s no wonder people have been able to create so many varieties.

Most countries around the world consume alcohol, and many prefer one type over the other. Often times, this correlates to the type of alcohol that country produces. For example, France and Italy are two of the most wine-loving countries — their citizens drink the majority of their alcohol in the form of wine. However, some countries prefer beer, and many others prefer a shot of hard liquor.

Also known as a distilled spirit, hard liquor has no added sugar and over 20 percent alcohol by volume. In the U.S., it also tends to be the drink of choice for underage binge-drinkers.

Using data from the World Health Organization, HealthGrove found the countries that drink the majority of their alcohol in the form of hard liquor and examined their respective binge-drinking rates. The percentage of binge-drinkers accounts for adults who have consumed six or more alcoholic beverages on at least one occasion in the past 30 days. If no data exists for these categories, it is not included.
