Cold Grey Light of Dawn,” Hudson Moore’s newest song is featured in the end credits of the recently released revenge filled western, “Sweetwater,” which stars January Jones, Ed Harris and Jason Isaacs.

Hudson Moore is an up-and-coming singer/songwriter from Fort Worth, Texas and had the good fortune of being directly known by one of the film’s producer.

It didn’t hurt that he recently topped the Country & Western charts in Texas with his debut single “Fireworks.”

Having the opportunity to interview him during the PR junket for the release of the revenge filled western “Sweetwater,” the following is an excerpt.

Janet Walker: Hi Hudson. How’s it going?

Hudson Moore: It’s going great. Just got back in town from Nashville, writing songs and back in Austin for the day and I’m heading to Dallas this afternoon. So kind of all over the place today. I’m glad we could squeeze these interviews in now.

JW: I see that you’re doing some touring. You’re touring through Texas, is that right?

HM: Yes. We’re tour regionally. So we’ll play all over Texas, Louisiana, Oklahoma and Arkansas. We share the stage with guys like Eli Young Band and Randy Rogers, Pat Greene recently so it’s been fun.

JW: So your song got picked up. Is that an original song for “Sweetwater?”

HM: Yes. My brother Tucker was a producer on the film and he asked me to write something, an original song for the film, sort of a theme song to be played at the end.

So he gave me a copy, a rough cut of the DVD, and I watched it with my friend Wally Wilson, and we wrote this song called “Cold Grey Light of Dawn.”  And we had about a week, the tough part was we had about a week to write it, record it, mix it and master it and we got it done  and it was very fun to be a part of that film.

JW: So when you got the DVD, the rough cut, and you began to look at it. What were your ideas that you kind of bounced around?  I mean a week isn’t a whole lot of time to make to create a song, mix it master, it like you said, create the music and write the lyrics for a nationally released film so what were some of the challenges or pressures you felt?

HM: It wasn’t as challenging as you might think. The film we were just inspired by it. Wally and I are huge fans of westerns some of my favorite films are “Lonesome Dove” and “Django Unchained” and movies like that.

So watching this film, it was really powerful it was different for me. It inspired sort of different emotion for me. A little bit darker subject matter. If you listen to the song it’s sort of like a period piece. It doesn’t sound like modern pop music. It has more of a folk song as far as a Bob Dylan and guys like that. And we really tried to channel that energy.

JW: Yea. It’s a nice song. Ok. So let’s go back – You said there wasn’t a whole lot of challenge or pressure in crating the Lyrics. So what were your inspirations?

HM: Well January Jones’ character mainly was who we were thinking of during this time. And all the trials she had to go through. Losing her husband and the Prophet Josiah trying to take advantage of her and I was just really thinking of her position.

And also not making the song applicable to just the movie; we wanted it to fit but we also wanted the song to stand alone outside the film. Mainly for us, January’s character, Sarah, she was the main focus for us. Just the strength of her character she was our main focus for writing his song, her story.

JW: Ok. Walk me through the process, a little bit. You developed the lyrics. You got the DVD and then? Did you bounce ideas off each other? What were your thoughts?

HM: It started out really raw. Wally actually came in with the title concept, “Cold Grey Light of Dawn,” I thought it was real ominous and in painted this picture just from that title. And we kind of went from there.

I picked up the guitar and started playing this rift and we really found the melody from there and also we were really trying to draw from some of our favorite artists. Like we were listening to some of our favorite Bob Dylan songs and take a bit of their influences. And we went into the studio once we had the melody and all the lyrics and we really just cut my vocal and the acoustic guitar and from there, a day or two later, we sent it to Nashville to the band to add other instruments like synthesizer, drums and bass.

Nashville studio superstars, they did their part on it, and a couple days later they sent me the final version.  And I was just blown away.

JW: So what’s next for you?

HM: I’m releasing album next month called “True Love.” I’ve been working on that while I’m on the road, recorded it in Nashville. I’ve been working on that for about a year now.  We’re finishing up our fall tour. So mainly I’ve been putting out this album doing a lot of co-writing in Nashville working on my next album. So doing a little bit of everything.

JW: Great. Hudson, Thanks so much for taking the time today. I really appreciate it.

Moore performed the song at the Sundance Film Festival during the “Sweetwater” premiere. He has also premiered his new song "Doin Just Fine."  He has been named by Country Line Magazine as November’s "Artist of the Month."  Moore was also included in CMA Closeup Magazine's "Who's New to Watch in 2013."
