AFI Conservatory Awards Season Update

American Film Institute is proud to share the most recent awards season accomplishments of AFI Conservatory alumni who have to date received six Golden Globe nominations, plus PGA and NAACP Image Award nominations and are shortlisted in five Oscar Categories.

73rd Golden Globe Award Nominations
This week, the following Conservatory alumni received six Golden Globe nominations:  AMERICAN HORROR STORY: HOTEL executive producers Brad Falchuk (AFI Class of 1994), Bradley Buecker (AFI Class of 2003) and Dante Di Loreto (AFI Class of 1991) for Best Television Limited Series; ANOMALISA co-director/producer Duke Johnson (AFI Class of 2006) for Best Motion Picture — Animated; plus MR. ROBOT executive producers Sam Esmail (AFIClass of 2004), who is also the show’s creator, and Steve Golin (AFIClass of 1981) for Best Television Drama. Golin is also nominated for two Best Motion Picture awards as a producer on both THE REVENANT and SPOTLIGHT.  TRANSPARENT producer Rick Rosenthal (AFI Class of 1973) has been nominated in the Television Comedy category.

27th Producers Guild of America Award Nominations
Three AFI Conservatory alumni received Producers Guild of America Award nominations for television: HOMELAND’s Lesli Linka Glatter (AFI DWW, Class of 1982) for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Drama; TRANSPARENT’s Rick Rosenthal for Outstanding Producer of Episodic Television, Comedy; and THE VOICE’s Lee Metzger (AFI Class of 2000) for Outstanding Producer of Competition Television.

47th NAACP Image Award Nominations
Also announced this week, the nominees for the 47th NAACP Image Award include Cicely Tyson (AFIDWW, Class of 1977), Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER; Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (AFIClass of 1995), Outstanding Directing for ME AND EARL AND THE DYING GIRL; and LaToya Morgan (AFIClass of 2005), Outstanding Writing in a Drama Series for TURN: WASHINGTON’S SPIES.

In this current year to date,AFIConservatory graduates have also received:  five spots throughout the Academy Award® shortlists; four WGA Award nominations; two Gotham Awards; three Annie Awards nominations; 10 Satellite Awards nominations; four Film Independent Spirit Awards nominations; three British Independent Film Award nominations; a News and Documentary Emmy Award®; a historic sweep of the 2015 Student Academy Awards Narrative category’s gold, silver and bronze prizes; two wins at the 67th Emmy Awards®; the FIPRESCI and Best Canadian Feature prizes at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival; the 72nd Venice International Film Festival’s Grand Jury Prize; the 2015 BAFTA U.S. Student Film Award; the 2015 Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation First Prize; and five wins at the 36th College Television Awards.

AFI Fellows make four to 10 films during their training. Graduates of the Conservatory are part of an elite group of 4,845 alumni — with 81% of AFI alumni working in the field according to a recent survey. Artists from the Conservatory have received a total of 133 Academy Award®nominations and 27 wins. Throughout the completed 2014-2015 academic year,AFI alumni have been nominated for 202 awards by 38 major guilds, academies and other professional associations — with 72 award wins.

The AFI Conservatory offers a two-year Master of Fine Arts degree in six filmmaking disciplines: Cinematography, Directing, Editing, Producing, Production Design and Screenwriting. Aspiring artists learn from the masters in a collaborative, hands-on production environment with an emphasis on storytelling. Within the Conservatory is also a unique training program, the AFI Conservatory Directing Workshop for Women (DWW).AFI Conservatory's alumni have been consistently recognized with all of the major industry awards — Academy Awards®, Emmy Awards®, guild awards — as well as the Tony Awards®. Esteemed director, producer and screenwriter James L. Brooks serves as Artistic Director of theAFIConservatory where he provides creative leadership for the elite film program.
