Kim Wall Murder: Judge Upgrades Charges; Peter Madsen to Stand Trial for Murder

Peter Madsen, 46, the eccentric Danish charged with manslaughter in the murder of Swedish Journalist Kim Wall, has proffered a third explanation for her murder and failed to acknowledge his culpability in the postmortem dismemberment.

Kim Wall, 30, the Columbia University educated freelancer, who had planned a quick stop over in Sweden to visit her family, arranged for an interview with Madsen, whose third self-constructed submarine had launched a global Indiegogo fundraising campaign to assist in repairs of the eight year old submarine.

Wall was last seen August 10, 2017 nearly one month ago standing in the tower of the submarine with Madsen as the two sailed across the Koge Bay. The evening sun had cast a warm glow across the thirty year old, who by chance was photographed by a passing boating enthusiasts.

That was the last time anyone would ever see Ms. Wall.

Madsen, who has been detained on charges of manslaughter for the murder of Ms. Wall “in unknown ways in an unknown location” has made an additional jailhouse statement on Ms. Wall’s murder.

From the moment he was picked up by Danish Navy, after sending distress messages indicating the Nautilus was sinking, Madsen has maintained his innocence in the murder of Wall.

Those initial moments until the vessel was raised and forensics found blood splatter matching that of Ms. Wall, Madsen first statements of dropping her off safely near the point where the two met was his official statement.

His second official statement indicated she died on board, after forensics had established and a made a gruesome discovery. A headless, limbless upper torso, sliced from the waist up washed ashore near Kogo Bay and was found by a passing bicyclist.

Madsen has now offered a third statement indicating Wall died of a head wound after he slipped and the heavy submarine steel hatch door fell on her head. She, he said was in a bloody mess at the bottom of the stairs with a head injury that killed her instantly.

No one is disputing that Ms. Wall died on board the submarine and his repeated revelations of new “details” on her death are almost secondary at this moment.

Unless Madsen is prepared to reveal who was aboard his vessel in addition to himself that “intentionally” dismembered Ms. Wall for the single and sole purpose of concealing her identity and stopping, slowing or stalling as well as tampering with evidence into her death and subsequent investigation, then he remains the last person to see her alive and solely responsibility for the dismemberment. 

Forensic specialists will ascertain if blood coagulated in the area of the ladder leading from the stairs and will, or should be able to match splatter patterns throughout the vessel.

Wall, more than likely didn’t associate this interview with a dangerous assignment. Such as riding in tanks or front lines reporting, and yet as a journalist she understood the dangers of these types of “ride along” enhancements to the assignment.

War journalist have suffered through attacks right along with troops and they understood the possibility of injury and death was part of the assignment.

Wall understood, somewhere, has she had covertly made it into North Korea, her colleagues say, the dangers of her profession.

A pleasure craft submarine, chances are she let her guard down a bit, clearly it wasn’t riding a tank in Iraq, and still accidents, fires, any number of mechanical errors could result in death and injury as escape was impossibile once the craft was submerged. 

Madsen has offered a third scenario that recounts her death due to a head injury caused by the submarine steel hatch door to fall on her as she descended the ladder into the submarine.

Her death on board would have still resulted in an investigation. What Madsen is refusing to discuss is how she ended up dismembered.

With more than one media agency proffering the scenario of drug trade and trafficking, to further that end it remains possible that the Nautilus was boarded by divers who handled the disposal of Ms. Wall and left the vessel with the remainder of her body parts.

As he continues to claim his innocence and remains resolute that he did not kill her and an accident would make that statement true and did not dismember her, the only scenario is that someone else did, someone else already aboard or who boarded his vessel.

The charges against Madsen, initially held on manslaughter, were upgraded to murder in court proceeding held Tuesday.

Judge Anette Burko, of Copenhagen District Court, agreed with the prosecution to upgrade the changes as she found his account "unreasonable." He is scheduled to return to court October 3, 2017.
