Kentucky School Shooting Leaves Two Dead; 18 Injured

Two students are dead and more than a dozen injured, four critically, after a lone gunman opened fire just as students were arriving for the day at Marshall County High School, in rural Kentucky, authorities have said.

Police and tactical teams arrived on the scene at 7:59a.m. two minutes after the first shot was fired. The Marshall County Sherriff’s Department has a school resource officer on site at the time of the shooting.

Bailey Nicole Holt, age 15, died from her injuries at Marshall High School. It has been reported by media that she telephoned her mother before her death. Her injuries were too severe. Preston Ryan Cope, also age 15, died after being transported to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee.

Twenty people were affected during the shooting, sixteen suffered gunshot wounds. In total, five were transported to Vanderbilt, the others to local hospitals. Victims ranged in age from 14 to 18 years old. Fourteen victims were male, and six were female. Of the four remaining victims at Vanderbilt, three are in critical but stable condition and one is in stable condition.

Five students were evacuated by helicopter to Vanderbilt Medical Center where the medical teams were equipped to handle traumatic injuries. One victim, a female, was released Wednesday night. The condition of the three others, all males, has been upgraded from critical to stable.

The other victims were transported to area hospitals. Sixteen students suffered gunshot wounds with four others injured as they escaped the carnage.

The suspect, a 15 year old male student has yet to be identified and was apprehended at the scene, without incident. A judge is currently deciding if he will be bound over for trial as an adult.

Marshall County High School is still considered a crime scene and remains closed. The school is expected to reopen Monday, January 29, 2018.

Vice President Mike Pence tweeted regarding the shooting, "We grieve with the people of Kentucky who seek comfort & healing during this moment of heartbreak. These acts of evil & senseless violence must end. We commend the courageous and heroic acts of law enforcement who responded quickly and are grateful for their efforts."
