Hollywood Celebrates The 100th Anniversary of Tinseltown’s First Ever Feature Film

Colossal. Stupendous. Epic. These Hollywood adjectives became clichés long ago. When used to describe the films of Cecil B. DeMille, they are accurate. This producer-director captured a worldwide audience with The King of KingsThe Sign of the Cross, The Greatest Show on Earth; Samson and Delilah, and The Ten Commandments.

He did it with spectacular scenes and extravagant images. The best of these images, lovingly preserved by the De Mille Estate, can be seen in Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic (Running Press, 12/16, $60.00). This lavish art-format book opens a treasure trove—concept paintings, costumes, props, and an array of photographic imagery.

There is an evocative text by his granddaughter, Cecilia de Mille Presley. Mrs. Presley was raised by C.B. DeMille and was present at the making of his later films. She brings a unique perspective to the DeMille legend.
