Neagley, from Prime Video, presents a Reacher franchise spin-off, with his protégé Frances Neagley working as a P.I. in Chicago, when a childhood friend dies in a suspicious accident she becomes determined to uncover the truth.
As Episode 1 opens, we see Tommy Crane, played by Jhaleil Swaby, slowly undressing as he walks along the train tracks obvious to the oncoming train. In a horrific instant he is killed. The man happens to be a childhood friend of Neagley's and when she attends the wake, she finds he had written her a letter explaining the turns of his life had led him to this farming community outside of Chicago.

When she begins to peel back the layers surrounding Tommy's death she ends up needing camera footage from the night he died. The Chicago P.D. explains the kid was high walked in front a train, and there is really nothing to investigate. After explaining its for the parents, they assign Hudson Riley, played by Greyston Holt, and he explains to Neagley "if you find anything it's my case."
By the end of the day, they found a witness, a street kid, named Keno, played by Jasper Jones, who happened to be in the area the night Tommy died. As Neagley befriends him, we understand her help is contingent only on finding what happened to her friend.
Slowly they trace him to a cult farming community, which on the outside looks quasi-legitimate. The community is willing to take in homeless or addicts, in exchange for the promise of staying clean, having no contact with the outside world, and working to keep the farm running. They sell the produce at local farmer's markets.

Neagley decides she will visit the farm alone, look around, meet the leaders, and pick up Tommy's belongings. During the visit she meets is Judith Gray, played by Rebecca Liddiard, who is the overseer for the cult's leader Lawrence Cole, played by Damon Herriman. As she is leaving, she is nearly run off the road by members of the cult. In the end the truck crashes and soon, everyone is understanding the cult is doing more than simply growing turnips.
She finally understand that whatever the cult is into she will need a team to unravel the well-kept cover-up. With Hudson on her side, and the private investigator in training, Renee, played by Adeline Rudolph, they enlist Keno to join. Keno, as a street wise kid, is able to move around the farm, and into all the hidden, forbidden places, gathering evidence, and images.
Once they have someone on the inside, we begin to understand the funding to keep the farm running is coming from a foreign pharmaceutical company who is a breath away from receiving FDA approval for the newest in PTSD and trauma treatment.

Understanding a human life has no value when it comes to corporate profits, and with billions on the table, a few members of the lost generation make no difference to Pierce Woodrow, played by Matthew Del Negro, as he ramps up the testing.
The investigation begins to take a darker turn, and even as Neagley is unaware who is behind the money, she is becoming the target as is everyone around her.
Told across eight episode, Neagley is a fast action, modern, thriller with unusual plot twists and turns. Throughout there are backstories, which help understand Neagley's personality. The character has rough edges, which allows for the other members of the inner circle to lead with a soft touch when needed. The character clearly has an arc, and the ending which is intended to be a conclusion of sorts really creates more baggage for her to work out in future episodes.
The story was fresh and addresses other more broad issues, including homelessness, cults, PTSD, childhood trauma, and corporate greed. The performances where authentic, and believable.
Alan Ritchson guest stars as Neagley is wrapping up a kidnapping case for the private investigation agency. Neagley, the Reacher spin-off, is filled with rising tension, unexpected revelations, shocking conclusions, and a surprising ending.
