Is MS Fatal?

However, severe MS can increase the risk of complications, such as infections, swallowing problems, falls, or decreased mobility. Early diagnosis, disease-modifying therapy, rehabilitation, and healthy lifestyle habits can help reduce complications and support long-term quality of life.

MS is most often diagnosed in young adults, commonly between ages 20 and 40, though it can occur at other ages. It affects millions of people worldwide and nearly 1 million people in the United States.

Women are more susceptible than men, especially to relapsing-remitting MS; many sources estimate that women are about two to three times more likely than men to develop this form. MS is also more common in regions farther from the equator, which may be related to sunlight exposure and vitamin D levels. Family history can increase risk, but MS is not inherited in a simple, direct way.

What Causes MS?

The exact cause of MS is unknown. Researchers believe it develops when a combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental triggers leads the immune system to attack the central nervous system.
