World News: Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu is Locked into War

By waging a war on two fronts, Israel gives the impression that the current conflict is more akin to a headlong rush to save Benjamin Netanyahu reputation than from the desire to free the hostages held since October 7, 2023.

At the risk of pushing Lebanon into civil war. Of course, the battles waged by the Israeli army in Gaza or in southern Lebanon, and in Beirut in particular, have so far ended in victories. But for all that, will Israel win the war that opposes it to Hamas and Hezbollah, and therefore by extension to Iran, which has sworn the disappearance of the Jewish state?

By means of massive or targeted bombings, by sweeping aside the Lebanese or Gazan civilian victims generated by these same bombings on the pretext that Israel's security comes before all other considerations, the Jewish state and with it its Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are giving themselves the illusion of an imminent victory against terrorist cells which, it is true, have been harassing Israelis for years.

Consequences and Violation

Reinforced in its action by the United States for domestic political issues where the Jewish community plays a major role in the various presidential elections, Israel seems to mock the consequences of these raids and assaults.

The first mistake tacitly endorsed by the United Nations is the violation of Gaza space and soil under the authority of the Palestinian representation, to which is added the violation of Lebanese space and soil, despite ineffective resolutions.

The second mistake, and not the least, is to underestimate the growing resentment among Lebanese and Shiite Gazan youth in the face of these murderous bombings, resentments that constitute the primary driver of fanaticism and terrorism in the years to come.

Embarked on a personal war that looks more like a headlong rush than a legitimate confrontation where the hostages held since October 7, 2023, no longer seem to be the primary reason for the war being waged, Benjamin Netanyahu is locking himself in a warmongering logic that only he and the IDF would be able to give political and military meaning to.

Sword of Damocles

Because this conflict also reveals the shortcomings and dysfunctions of a state, Israel, in a situation of latent war since 1948.  This democracy, over which hangs an eternal sword of Damocles in view of its geographical location on the border with Arab countries more or less inclined to accept its presence, refers by its existence to the unforgivable mistakes of European nations during the Second World War and the Balfour Declaration of 1917, not to mention a thousand-year-old history, the breeding ground for its birth in pain.

Thus, between contemporary reality and complex geopolitics and ancient or more recent history, Israel and the nations that surround it, starting with the fragile Lebanon on the brink of civil war, are certainly living in a period, if not the darkest, of its so short and long history.
