Carlos The Jackal Receives Life Sentence for 1974 Paris Bombing

Carlos The Jackal, born Iiyich Ramirez Sanchez, was sentenced to a third life sentence in a French court for his role in the 1974 bombing on a Paris Drug Store that killed two and wounded 34.

During the 1970’s, Ramirez-Sanchez, a Venezuelan citizen, was one of the world’s most wanted political terrorist. A known revolutionary who support the advancement of the Palestine State, Ramierz-Sanchez, who held deep Russian-Marxist beliefs.

His deep beliefs, which were fueled, supported and developed at an early age by his parents who were also devoted Marxist, were formalized during his two years at the Patrice Lumumba University in Moscow.

After dropping out in 1970, Carlos volunteered for guerrilla military training, and continued to advance in skill gaining more attention of superiors who eventually sent him to train under international terrorist Wadie Haddad.

An educated man, Carlos studied at the Polytechnic of Central London and brought the liberation of Palestine message to the streets of London. His official induction as a terrorist began in 1973.

During these years, the Israeli and Palestine War escalated with vicious bombings in the streets of Israeli cities as the Palestinians, demanding recognition as a free state, terrorized the Israelis.

This war spilled over into every major European city, as Palestinian Guerilla leaders had recruited devoted fanatics willing to die for the cause.

The Jackal - A Fanatic Assassin

Carlos the Jackal, was devoted and by all accounts he was a highly skilled assassin and not considered a street terrorist.

His reign of terror began in 1973 with a failed assassination attempt, a retaliation for Mossad assassination of a Palestine Leader.

He participated in a Paris Restaurant bomb attack that killed two and injured 30; he participated in two other failed grenade attacks on El Al airplanes at Orly Airport in 1975.

In June of 1975 Carlos was identified by a fellow terrorist, Michel Moukharbal, who was being interrogated by French government. The agents were unarmed. Carlos shot the two agents and Moukharbal and managed to escape to Beirut via Brussels.

The war between the Israeli and Palestinians escalated with lines drawn in many nations.

Carlos The Jackal remained free until 1994 when in a joint French-U.S. Intelligence mission the Jackal was recuperating from minor surgery and given a tranquilizer sedative. He was bound and transported to France where he stood trail.

He was charged only for the murders of the two French agents and the Palestinian operative Moukharbal. His trial lasted 11 days. He was sentenced to Life in prison in December 23, 1997.
