September 11, 2001 - We Remember

Today marks the 14th Anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The reading of the names of the lives lost in the attacks happened this morning at the National September 11 Memorial and Museum.

For those who worked around the former World Trade Center, the maze and sheer mass of buildings seemed common and yet it was this majestic monument to modernization.

Millions traveled through the subways that exited through the complex of buildings. "Welcome to the World Trade Center" greeted the masses as they rode the bank of escalators that accessed the retail floors of 1 World Trade. Up to 10,000 office workers, from CEO to janitor, on a normal day, would be busy inside each of the Twin Towers.

Hurricane Katrina A Decade Later: Graphics Explain Devastation, Damage

Tuesday, September 11, 2001, was not that day. A city-wide Election Day, candidates were still trading barbs as the next mayor of the Big Apple was the prize.

The beautiful early fall day would dawn to still warm Indian summer temps. The NFL Giants-Broncos game, at Denver, played later than usual the night before which resulted in a slow start for many and smart thinking workers figured long lines at the polls could cover for any tardiness. The combination of events saved tens of thousands from death.

Later that day after the unimaginable listening to assessments form then Mayor Rudy Giuliani, NYPD Commissioner Bernard Keriek, and FDNY Commissioner Thomas Van Essen, FDNY who said, "We experienced heavy losses." Unable to fathom what exactly that meant 12, 20, two dozen? The numbers were staggering.

First responders suffered a heartbreaking hit on that day. 343 Firefighters were killed. The attacks took the lives of `37 Port Authority Police Officers; 23 New York Police Department officers and eight EMT's. The death toll on that day reached 2,977 civilians.

The memories are vivid from that day. Unable to break free from the news coverage, in horror watching those long dead attempt feeble escapes. And understanding desire to live, hope for tomorrow, family, friends, drove those normally sane to attempt the impossible.

Still, now, after all these years, unable to imagine the panic, the feelings of desperation, the fight or flight fear, the last moment of a well lived life ending at the hands of a lunatic and the unfairness of it all.
