James “Whitey” Bulger, the organized crime boss who fled Boston and lived 16 years as a fugitive, was convicted of murder, extortion, money laundering, drug dealing and gun possession.

Bulger, the former Boss of the White Hill Gang, learned in 1994 of a pending indictment and fled the frozen Northeast for sunny California and lived a seemingly mild, under the radar, life in the beautiful coastal city of Santa Monica, California.

Bulger and his companion, Catherine Gregg were arrested on June 22, 2011 in a dramatic full scale raid.

Deliberating for more than 32 hours, over five days, a jury found the former mafia fugitive guilty of murder and racketeering conspiracy,  possession of a cache of weapons including machine guns, extortion, distribution of narcotics, money laundering.

The jury also found that Bulger played a role in the murders of 11 people including, Deborah Hussey, Paul McGonagle, Edward Connors, Thomas King, Richard Castucci, Roger Wheeler, Brian Holloran, Michael Donahue, John Callahan, Arthur Barrett and John McIntyre.

Bulger’s companion was convicted of harboring a fugitive and is currently serving and eight term in a federal prison.

Bulger’s Winter Hill Gang, in the 1970’s and 1980’s, ran South Boston with a large criminal network that included extortion, money laundering, gambling, narcotics distribution and racketeering as well as violence, threat and intimidation tactics that included force, bodily harm and grievous injury.

Bulger’s sentencing hearing is scheduled for November 30, 2013 where he is expected to receive a life sentence plus 30 years.
