Judge in Stanford Rape Case Stops Hearing Criminal Cases

Judge Aaron Persky, who sentenced the Stanford convicted rapist to six months including time served, has stopped hearing felony cases due to the public outrage over his leniency in what has been deemed a travesty of justice.

Persky, who was the subject of a public recall stemming from his disregard of the depravity of the crime, sentenced Brock Turner to six months in county jail with time off for good behavior. Turner is expected to be released in September.

Ignoring the sentencing recommendations of the prosecutor, Persky deemed the rape, of an unconscious, intoxicated woman, a typical night out for Stanford freshmen and one that is essentially part of the campus culture and almost a rite of passage.

After the sentencing, UltraViolet, a national women's advocacy organization, and the Stanford community at large united against the Judge demanding his recall gathering more than 1.2Million signatures.

The Court announced this week Persky will begin hearing civil cases September 6, 2016.
