Obama Signals Victory; Romney Vows Swift Action if Elected -The Road to the White House - Election 2012 - Week 26

Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican Presidential candidate, has vowed swift action, if elected in November, to repeal the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act known as Obamacare.

The signature piece of healthcare legislation signed into law in 2010 and upheld this week , in its entirely, by the Supreme Court has been widely criticized by the GOP stalwart as ineffective in addressing U.S. Healthcare reform.

According to Gallup, as of June 30, 2012 among registered voters President Obama’s national popularity gained a single percentage point this week to 47% and Mitt Romney national popularity dropped two percentage points to 44%.

Obama’s current overall ratings, according to Gallup, gained a single percentage point over the past week to 47% approve of his effectiveness as President and those who disapprove of his effectiveness gained a single percentage points to 47%.

In addition to Race as Gallup points out still plays a predominate role in approval rating among registered voters, healthcare is also a sharply divided issue with political affiliation the dividing line as 68% of Republicans believe Obamacare should be repealed in its entirety as opposed to 7% of Democrats and 23% Independents.  

Obamacare or The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act unless in part or fully repelled mandates that all citizens by 2014 either purchase health insurance independently or opt in to an employer provided benefit or face penalties known as a tax.  Additionally, The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act mandates catastrophically or seriously ill citizens cannot be denied benefits, women cannot be charged higher rates and parents can provide coverage for their children to the age of 26.  Also, under the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act the government guarantees that Health insurance will be available for all.

With the Republican National Convention less than two months away the single most important announcement from the Romney camp will be the choice for his Vice Presidential Candidate.  As only two known candidates, Florida Junior Senator Marco Rubio and Chairman of the House Budget Committee, Wisconsin Representative Paul Ryan are in the vetting process, the question becomes are both these two men ready to assume the presidency should the unthinkable happen?  

The GOP primary season concluded this past week with a final contest held in Utah on June 26. As expected Mitt Romney handily won and added an additional forty delegates to his total.

According to the Wall Street Journal 2012 Delegate tracker total for all candidates have been adjusted. Of the 2286 total available delegates, Mitt Romney has secured 1,512 delegates. At this time Rick Santorum holds 255 delegates, Ron Paul, 158 and Newt Gingrich; 138.

The Republican National Convention is slated for August 27-30, 2012 in Tampa Bay, Florida where GOP Party leaders from each state will officially pledge the delegates awarded during the primary season and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney will officially be nominated as the Republican Presidential Candidate.
