Memphis Police Beating: Tyre Nichols

Memphis Police have terminated the five black police officers accused of second-degree murder of Tyre Nichols, an unarmed 29-year-old black man, who was beaten, kicked, tasered, pepper sprayed and denied medical assistance, after an unmarked police car stopped him for allegedly reckless driving.

Nichols, who complained he was having trouble breathing, was beaten for more than three minutes with the majority of the heinous attack captured on several video cams. The tapes show officers kicking and punching the victim even as he was clearly not resisting.

"Tyre Nichols died on Jan. 10, days, after he was involved in a traffic stop conducted by the Memphis Police Department that left him critically injured. Nichols fled the traffic stop scene, and the police began to chase him. Police brutalized him to the point of being unrecognizable," famed Civil Rights attorney Ben Crump said in a released statement posted on Twitter. He further said, "Tyre suffered extensive bleeding caused by a severe beating."

After the beating, which was captured on video cam and police body cam, police officers were heard discussing details of the event in order to ensure corroboration of the timeline. We understand the taser was deployed, a handcuffed and subdued suspect was pepper sprayed, and the officers were clearly winded, and angry they had to chase the suspect who was in fear of his life.

NBCNews Exclusive: American Policing - Most Officers Never Fire Their Guns, Others Kill Many

The former officers involved were members of the elite crime fighting unit, SCORPION, which has been disbanded due to the Nichols murder. Each of the officers involved were veterans of the force, with a minimum of three years to six years of service. Terminated and charged are former Memphis Police Officers Tadarrius Bean and Demetrius Haley both hired August of 2020; Emmitt Martin, III, hired March 2018, Officer Desmond Mills, Jr., hired March 2017, and Officer Justine Smith hired March 2018, were all terminated.

"After a thorough review of the circumstances surrounding this incident, we have determined that five MPD officers violated multiple department policies including excessive use of force, duty to intervene, and duty to render aid," Memphis Police Department Chief Cerelyn "CJ" Davis said in a released statement.

Both the FBI and Tennessee Attorney General's office have opened investigation into the possibility of civil rights abuses against the officers.

A second shift Fed-Ex employee, Nichols was on his way home, when he was stopped by an unmarked police car, ordered to exit the vehicle and was immediately surrounded by multiple officers who began yelling commands and expletives. He attempted to comply, and was clearly concerned. From the body cam footage, it appears as if the officers had immediate knowledge of an egregious outstanding violation in which the protocol was excessive and aggressive force.

"This is not just a professional failing. This is a failing of basic humanity toward another individual," Davis said, saying the five officers and others who were involved in his death "failed our community, and they failed the Nichols family. That is beyond regrettable," reported.

The murder of Tyre Nichols echo's of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Rodney King, and other high profile police brutality cases, which stemmed from abuse of power. In most cases, the police perpetrators were white, in the case of Tyre Nichols, all the officers who participated in the brutal heinous, and inhumane beating were black.

While it is more than a belief of elitism, the civil war within the race has never been more obvious or evident as it is when viewing the body cam video of Tyre Nicholas.

President Biden, VP Harris, and leaders across the nation have voiced outrage. Both Biden and Harris issued statements which can be seen here for Biden and Harris. Excerpts are below.

President Biden Statement

"We must do everything in our power to ensure our criminal justice system lives up to the promise of fair and impartial justice, equal treatment, and dignity for all. Real and lasting change will only come if we take action to prevent tragedies like this from ever happening again. That is why I called on Congress to send the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to my desk. "

VP Kamala Harris Statement

"Congress must act with urgency and pass the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act. To truly honor Tyre Nichols' memory, and the memory of so many others before him, we must demand that our justice system lives up to its name."

DNA Solves Decades Old Cold Case

Victim/Suspect, a Documentary Examining Police Practices, Premieres at Sundance

Victim/Suspect, directed by Nancy Schwartzman recently premiered at Sundance Film Festival, tells the story of a shocking trend in American policing as rape victims are routinely interrogated, threatened, accused of lying and coerced into "admitting" they lied which leads to charges against the female victims, and in some cases imprisonment.

The systemic police corruption was uncovered by reporter Rae De Leon, and The Center for Investigative Reporting, initially explains her background, and how investigative news reporting became her passion. Most importantly, we also understand the stories go through a rigorous vetting process.

Skepticism, devil's advocate, are also part of the journalists backpack of tools, and we understand when the victims are introduced and are told yes, but the admitted guilt, made plea deals, so essentially it's a non-story story. Yes, the adage associated with reporting rape is never truer than in these cases, rape once by the perpetrator, raped again by the system.

Of course the national statistics on rape don't help either, of every 1000 cases only 6 see the inside of a courtroom. Prosecutors reply heavily on their detectives, who may or may not be dedicated, who may or may be devoted or who may as this film presents have clear bias.

Overweight, sympathy fuck gone bad, felt guilty for the one-night stand, she wanted it, she was, blah, blah, blah. Detectives are cruel, even to the point of asking victims with no memory, those who have been drugged, and can present evidentiary support, to regurgitate details they cannot and then present no memory as a victim wanting to cover for the rapist.

Even with a sitting president who as vice-president championed the "It's on Us" initiative to stop campus rape, the statics are skewed as victim's often refuse to press charges, which in the mind of the perpetrator is permission to commit rape after rape after rape. And let's not even talk about affluent rapists, who lawyer up so fast and begin the ad hominin attacks on the victim, in order to control the narrative, before the results have arrived or those who can provide incentive to hush things up.

Horrifying, sickening and traumatizing, are some of the reactions posted after Victim/Suspect premiered at Sundance Film Festival. The documentary, which was bought by Netflix, will begin streaming sometime in 2023.
