The Fall Guy Review – Entertaining, Action-Packed, Rom-Com

The Fall Guy, from Universal Pictures, brings to the screen an entertaining, action-packed romantic dramady that parodies the movie making process, with all its quirks, and the unsung hero of action movies, the stunt man.

The movie begins with an ode to the stunt man, and voice over by Ryan Gosling, who is explaining the stunt man, the unsung hero, makes every action star look great. As the collage of action scenes fades, we are on the set of the next blockbuster action movie with action star Tom Ryder, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and his stunt double Colt Seavers, played by Ryan Gosling.

The Brink Of Review – Charming Coming of Age Romance Dramady

After the shot, the Director of Photography, Jodi Moreno, and Colt are in his trailer, making plans for a late-night rendezvous. When Tom Ryder's producer the formidable Gail Meyer, played by Hannah Waddingham, sees the take she suggests they redo the fall, as Colt's face is visible. The next shot, in which we see Colt rigged to the top of a building, falling backward, and he should land softly, is an epic fail, and he breaks his back. His life, he believes as a stunt man is over.

Eighteen months later we meet up again with Colt, who is now parking cars in L.A., when one night the director from the New York City film, played by Scott Johnson, shows up and recognizes him and begins to tell the world about his epic fail.

Soon after, he gets a call from Gail Meyer, who explains that Jody, the once love of your life, specifically requested you to stunt double for Tom Ryder on her first directorial feature. She makes all the arrangements and the next day he is on the MetalStorm set working with Dan Tucker, played by Winston Duke.

Challengers Review – Hypnotic, Explosive Performances Elevate Common Story

Once Jody, discovers that Colt is now the stunt man, we realize that Gail, the producer had brought him to Sydney under false pretenses and Jody is still stung from their romance that never made it off the runway, even though it seemed that, as she explains, that it had already been at a cruising altitude.

So, as this is her first feature, and her entire directorial career seems to hand in the balance over this epic space odyssey that she is directing, everything must work according to plans, which of course, doesn't.

As Jody labors to make her movie, we understand a director's work is never done as she meets late for studio calls, third act revisions, dailies and putting out the fires from overzealous producers, while maintaining control.

What she doesn't know is that Gail brought Colt to Sydney to find Tom Ryder, the biggest actor star in the world, who has gone missing.

The Absence of Eden Review – Both Flawed and Flawless

With Colt managing the stunts, and keeping it professional with Jody, he is off running private investigator errands for Gail. Soon he is in the middle of intrigue, mayhem, and real danger as he stumbles on the body of the stunt double, he replaced and is accused of murdering him, in a deep fake frame.

The Fall Guy kicks off the summer blockbuster movie season with a high octane, action packed, romcom, murder mystery, that adds intrigue, exotic locales, and access to behind-the-scenes thrills of watching the movie making process.

Throughout the scenes on the set, the audience is treated to the behind the scenes, set visit that is usually reserved for guests or media. The filmmaking process, stunts, pyrotechnics, rainmaking, props, and stunt falls are all featured, which essentially what the audience is seeing is the movie making process within the movie.

High action with electrifying stunt sequences, The Fall Guy is a fun, entertaining, intriguing, romantic dramady. See it.
