You Hurt My Feelings Review – Entertaining Dramatic Comedy Delivers

You Hurt My Feelings, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival, presents a dramady about a long-married couple whose marriage is in trouble after she overhears her husband's explaining his real feelings about her newest novel.

As the film begins, we meet Beth, played by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Don, played by Tobias Menzies, who have been married for at least 20 years and they have settled into their New York City lifestyle. He is a psychologist with a private practice and she a successful novelist. They have one child, Eliot, played by Owen Teague, who after receiving an exceptional education he is seemingly without career direction and works at a weed store.

Beth is finished with her novel and her literary agent, Sylvia, played by LaTanya Richardson Jackson, who explains there are so many new voices out there and everyone has issues, the more issues, the louder the voices. By the end of the conversation, we understand Sylvia, is gently trying to convey the book isn't up to the standards of her first bestseller.

One day Beth is walking with her sister, Sarah, played by Michaela Watkins, who suggests they surprise Don and her husband Mark, played by Arian Moayed, as they approach them, Beth overhears Don, who has always been supportive and encouraging, explain that he really doesn't like her new book. She is shocked and hurt.

The betrayal of trust sends her into a tailspin, and she begins to doubt if the life they built together was a sham in comparison to the immense betrayal of trust.

We also understand as we are privy to the therapy sessions that Don, who is counseling a married couple for nearly nine years is facing a personal professional crisis himself. As they attempt to work through their issues, we realize the only common bond between the couple is the fact that they believe they have wasted a significant sum of money and have not received anything from it and they want their money back.

As both Beth and Don are facing both personal and professional crisis, Eliot, their son, is going through a betrayal as he and his girlfriend break up and as a writer, he is in the shadow of a highly successful literary mother and equally successful father, which he believes leaves little room for him to make his mark.

Emily Review – Captivating, Resonating, Emotionally Charged

You Hurt My Feelings, was Director/Writer Nicole Holocener's fourth film to be screen at Sundance Film Festival. The dramatic comedy is entertaining, with the right amount of professional angst, drama, and the nuances from the New York City lifestyle.

The ensemble cast delivers solid, engaging, and genuine performances, and as expected Julia Louis-Dreyfus delivers big laughs and captures the unsteadiness of Manhattan's literati balanced by the sensitivities embodied by Tobias Menzies. Owen Teague delivers his best performance to date.
