98TH Oscars® Nominations Announced

In the acting categories, 11 individuals are first-time nominees, Rose Byrne, Jacob Elordi, Elle Fanning, Michael B. Jordan, Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas, Delroy Lindo, Wunmi Mosaku, Wagner Moura, Renate Reinsve, Stellan Skarsgård, and Teyana Taylor. Four are previous acting winners, Benicio Del Toro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Sean Penn and Emma Stone. Timothée Chalamet is the only acting nominee who was also nominated last year.

Amy Madigan's acting nomination for Weapons comes 40 years after her first nomination for her supporting role in Twice in a Lifetime (1985), which is the third-longest span between acting nominations, after Judd Hirsch (42 years) and Henry Fonda (41).

Nominee Reactions

The Hollywood Reporter spoke with Hamnet nominated actress Jessie Buckley, who had this to say:

"Buckley, who was previously nominated in supporting for her turn in Maggie Gyllenhaal's The Lost Daughter, had much to celebrate, even with that bittersweet note — and even with her baby crying in the car beside her, as we caught up by phone to celebrate the news.

What's the feeling?

My baby's screaming in the background, but I am thrilled. (Laughs.) I'm so proud and honored to be beside all those extraordinary women and to be there with Hamnet. I'm delighted.

I was bummed to see that Paul wasn't nominated today. What's your reaction?

Yeah, look, I think he's extraordinary in this film. I know I've met a partner for life in doing this with him. I don't know what to say apart from he is, to me, my absolute. His artistry is something that will continue to grow and be a theme in so many different ways. I know what we created together is something that's so special to us, and I hold that so dearly in my heart, and there's no part of Agnes that exists without Paul. There's no part of what I created or what we created in this story which exists without Paul and what he poured into this story. So what is recognized belongs to him as much as him being recognized in his own category would," reported The Hollywood Reporter.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Announces New Acquisitions

From The Secret Agent Casting Director Gabriel Domingues had this to say upon hearing of his nomination:

Best Casting

"It is an immense honor to receive this nomination for my work as casting director on The Secret Agent. It's a privilege to be nominated alongside the casting directors I have always looked up to.

As the casting director, my work on The Secret Agent was guided by a singular theme: memory. Each character we cast, no matter how small, had to be rooted in authenticity and the specific reality of Brazil in 1977. The process required finding performers whose presence, faces, and inner lives could truthfully unlock the social, emotional, and historical layers of a precise moment and place in time.

This nomination is especially meaningful because it recognizes the ensemble as a whole, built through careful collaboration, trust, and openness to both established actors and new voices. I am deeply grateful to our maestro Kleber Mendonça Filho, our producer Emilie Lesclaux, the entire The Secret Agent team, and to NEON for championing the film. I am honored that my peers in the Academy have recognized this work." - Casting Director Gabriel Domingues [Statement]

New York Film Critics Circle Announce 2025 Winners

From SIRAT Sound Engineers Laia Casanovas, Amanda Villavieja, and Yasmina Praderas had this to say upon hearing of their historic nomination as the first time nomination for a female only sound team.

Achievement in Sound

"We are thrilled to have received this nomination. We extend our sincere congratulations to the other nominees, it is an honour to share this alongside such talented and inspiring colleagues.

This is a milestone we never could have imagined, and it fills us with deep joy and gratitude. We are thankful to be the first women-led sound team nominated in this category -- the significance of this moment is not lost on us. The film required taking risks on both a technical and creative level in order to create a raw, impactful, and atmospheric soundscape in service of the story, and we are delighted to see that these efforts and decisions are recognised by our fellow peers from the Academy.

We want to acknowledge and thank our visionary filmmaker Oliver Laxe, our wonderful producers, and the diverse communities who have championed this unique story. Thank you to the NEON team and the distributors worldwide for all of their support."
