Luke Perry, Film and Television Star, Dies at 52

Luke Perry, the way too cool star of the 1990's teen television hit Beverly Hills, 90210, died today after suffering a massive stroke five days ago from which he never recovered. He was 52.

By all accounts Perry was responsive when paramedics arrived at his Sherman Oaks, California, home on Wednesday, February 27, and verbalized some aspects of his condition. During transport to the hospital, his condition deteriorated rapidly. He was sedated according to his reps and multiple media sources. He died today without ever regaining consciousness.

A released statement read: "Actor Luke Perry, 52, passed away today after suffering a massive stroke. He was surrounded by his children Jack and Sophie, fianceé Wendy Madison Bauer, ex-wife Minnie Sharp, mother Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder, and other close family and friends. The family appreciates the outpouring of support and prayers that have been extended to Luke from around the world, and respectfully request privacy in this time of great mourning. No further details will be released at this time."

When news of his untimely death was announced friends, former cast-mates, directors and executives all spoke of someone kind, generous, a consummate professional, someone who loved and was loved, gracious, a good, decent person.

A statement from "Riverdale" Executive Producers Greg Berlanti, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, Sarah Schechter and Jon Goldwater, Warner Bros Television and the CW was posted on Twitter. It read, "We are deeply saddened to learn today about teh passing of Luke Perry. A beloved member of the Riverdale, Warner Bros and CW family, Luke was everything you would hope he would be: an incredibly caring, consummate professional with a giant heart, and a true friend to all. A father figure and mentor to the show's young cast, Luke was incredibly generous, and he infused the set with love and kindness. Our thoughts are with Luke's family during this most difficult time." 

Perry is best known for his role as heartthrob Dylan McKay. With James Dean good looks, he exuded cool in a way that most only hope, and it propelled him along with the more well-known cast members to stardom in the teen drama "Beverly Hills, 90210." Running for a total of seven seasons, Perry, to fans around the world, became synonymous with the character he portrayed.

Born in Mansfield, Ohio, Perry moved away from the Midwest after graduating high school and started his acting career in New York. As with many brooding young talents, New York challenged him and after more than 250 auditions he landed a gig.

After a couple of spots on two daytime dramas he won the role that would catapult him to international fame and solidify his career. Perry worked steadily from 1991 and was currently a main cast member of the CW television show "Riverdale." He also completed filming the role of Scott Lancer in the upcoming Quentin Tarantino film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Perry is survived by his children Jack and Sophie, fianceé Wendy Madison Bauer, his mother, Ann Bennett, step-father Steve Bennett, brother Tom Perry, sister Amy Coder.

Funeral arrangements have not been released and his family has requested privacy at this time.
