Looking through the 176 pages, the book dives into all 26 of his films, beginning with his very early work from the 1960s, including What's a Nice Girl Like You Doing in a Place Like This, (1963), and It's Not Just You, Murray, (1964), and his first color film, The Big Shave, (1967). Little Italy also adds themes to Scorsese's personal life, as a devout Catholic, an alter boy, and an asthmatic. Introduced to film by his cinema loving father, and while many film students can name pivotal films of the 1950s, and 1960s, to Scorsese they became his religion.

In 1969, Scorsese would meet Harvey Keitel, when he showed up for an audition in Brighton Beach for Scorsese's Tisch School of the Arts master's degree project, Who's That Knocking at My Door.  It would be the first of his leading men muses, and through Keitel, he would meet Robert De Niro, who would make his debut Mean Streets, (1973) opposite Keitel. In 1974, Scorsese directed film, Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore, solidified his career and created opportunity. Filled with pictures of these early films, Nathan also explains that Scorsese found actors who understood the world as he did.

"God's Lonely Man," Chapter three, is devoted to Taxi Driver, which featured both Keitel and De Niro, and a young Jodie Foster. Across seventeen pages, Nathan pulls the reader into Scorsese process, and with many of his films, we meet characters that have stood the test of time and have found their way into cinematic universe. Who can forget De Niro's iconic "You talking to me," scene? "God's Lonely Man," also reveals the changes in the industry, as one would think after Scorsese's successes he would have the opportunity to make any picture he wanted. Through the remainder of the 1970s and 1980s, Scorsese continued, in retrospect to create provoking films, Raging Bull, (1980) which is considered one the greatest film ever made, earned eight Academy Award nominations, and De Niro who portrayed the title character Jake LaMotta, won the Oscar for Best Actor, and Thelma Schoonmaker, Scorsese's longtime editor would also win an Oscar.

"Wiseguys," is devoted to the making of Goodfellows (1990) and throughout the chapter, Nathan unpacks the film, breaking down Scorsese's signature themes, as he continues to use his personal experiences to amplify the seminal characters in this prototypical genre, weaving his Little Italy roots with modern storytelling. Goodfellows has cemented a place in cinematic pop-culture and history.
