The Primetime Emmy Awards announced the list of nominees this week, with the streamers leading the nominations including the HBO medical drama The Pitt nabbing 25 nominations and the MAX original comedic drama Hacks securing 24 nominations.
Primetime Emmy Announced
The 78th Primetime Emmy nominations were announced this week by Liza Colón-Zayas, (Tina, The Bear) and Jeff Hiller, (Joel, Somebody, Somewhere) alongside Television Academy chair Chris Abrego.

HBO Max received a leading 122 Primetime Emmy nominations across its original programs for the 2026 awards including the medical drama, The Pitt starring Noah Wylie earning a record 25 nominations, the highest of any show during the 2026 season. Following closely the dramatic comedy, Hacks, starring seven time Emmy winner Jean Smart, earned 24 nominations, tying the record set in the 2024, for most nominations in a comedy series.
Rounding out HBO's impressive nominations include DTF St. Louis earning 13 nominations and The Gilded Age, receiving eight nominations including Outstanding Drama Series and Lead Actress for star Carrie Coon.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms earned nine nominations including Outstanding Drama Series; Euphoria, which earned seven nominations including Outstanding Lead Actress for Zendaya and Outstanding Guest Actor, Colman Domingo; Rooster which included a nomination for Lead Actor Steve Carell, and Task which earned six nominations including a lead actor nomination for Mark Ruffalo.
Netflix, considered the leader and behemoth in streaming, followed HBO with 111 nominations including Beef with 16 nominations; The Beast in Me, nine nominations; Black Rabbit, seven nominations; The Diplomat, seven nominations; and Monster: The Ed Gein Story, seven nominations.
Apple TV scored a total of 89 nominations including 19 from the horror comedy Widow's Bay, Shrinking, with 10 nominations, Margo's Got Money Troubles, eight nominations, and global hit dramas Pluribus, with 18 nominations, Slow Horses, with nine nominations, and Your Friends & Neighbors, one nomination, The Morning Show, received one nomination, Palm Royale eight nominations, Murderbot three nominations, Mr. Scorsese, three nominations and The Reluctant Traveler With Eugene Levy, earned two nominations.

Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette), Miriam Shor (Pluribus), Megan Stalter (Hacks), Connor Storrie (Saturday Night Live), Joy Sunday (DTF St. Louis), Carlos-Manuel Vesga (Pluribus), Matt Vogel (The Muppet Show), Lauren Weedman (Hacks), Karolina Wydra (Pluribus), Youn Yuh-Jung (Beef).
The 78th Primetime Emmy Awards, hosted by Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay will be broadcast live on Monday, September 14, 2026. The ceremony takes place at the Peacock Theater at L.A. Live in Los Angeles and will be broadcast on NBC and streamed live on Peacock.
"There were 212 series submitted for Emmy consideration in the drama, comedy, limited series and TV movie categories, a 7 percent drop compared to last year, representing a fourth consecutive year of declines. Compared with 2022, when television was thriving in its so-called Peak TV era, the number of series eligible for a top program award is down a staggering 39 percent," The New York Times reported.

With fewer productions being filmed in California, Los Angeles is facing a production recession, brought on by a series of unforeseen workflow downturns beginning with the 2020 pandemic, which forced the closure of all productions, followed by the 2023 SAG and WGA unions prolonged strike, again disrupting productions.
The last straw, of course, for LA based productions comes down to simple economics. The cost of production in Los Angeles can be 20% to 40% higher than in other more regions of the country. Production hubs including Atlanta, Wilmington, North Carolina, and Albuquerque. Soundstage occupancy in Los Angeles has dropped to 62%, after historic highs of 90% from 2012 to 2019.
Every aspect of a production, from permits to crew hires to equipment rentals, is more expensive in the movie making capital of the world, and with the continual growth of the streaming market and the box office squeeze, economics are now the current dictator for determining the location of filming.
Even with California's attractive transferrable tax rebates, the competition for approval is more changeling than other locations that offer attractive tax credits or cash rebates and offer low overall production costs.

Television City Sale
The continued Los Angeles production downturn is being blamed for the recent announcement that the famed Television City Studios, located at Fairfax Avenue and Beverly Boulevard, once home to many iconic television productions, is being sold due to excessive debt.
"Television City's owner, Hackman Capital Partners, is already in the process of selling the historic Radford Studio Center, which gave L.A.'s Studio City neighborhood its name. Hackman defaulted on a $1.1-billion mortgage in January, and investment bank Goldman Sachs took over the property, which is now escrow for a sale to Netflix," The Los Angeles Times reported.
Television City Studios, built in 1952, produced an outcrop of growth in the neighborhood including the famed "The Grove," located nearby. While some of the buildings on the Television Studio lot are historically protected, new buildings can be renovated or torn down, if the new owners decided the space is better suited for retail or an extension of the Fairfax and Third Street Grove Market.
More over the economy along the Fairfax Avenue strip has also faced retail depression, due in part to the pandemic and the inability to recover the loss.

Warner Ranch Studios Set for LA Olympics
The Warner Bros Ranch Lot Studios, located in Burbank, California, has been announced as the broadcast home for the LA 28 Olympics.
"LA28 and Warner Bros. Discovery on Thursday jointly announced that the 30-acre Hollywood Way campus would play a pivotal role in the Games. Constructing an efficient TV nerve center — the operational hub where feeds from events are produced, then distributed to hundreds of millions of viewers around the world — has long been a crucial component to staging such an ambitious television extravaganza," The Los Angeles Times reported.
The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games (LA28) will take place from July 14 to July 30, 2028, with the Paralympics following from August 15 to August 27, 2028.
