American Film Institute Announces 2019 AFI European Union Film Showcase Lineup

The AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center announced today the complete slate of films for the 2019 AFI European Union Film Showcase, taking place December 4–22 at the American Film Institute's historic theatre in Silver Spring, MD.

Now in its 32nd year, the Showcase highlights 46 films representing all 28 EU member states, including award winners, regional box-office hits, debut works by up-and-coming talents and new works by leading auteurs, plus 11 of the top contenders for this year's Academy Award® for Best International Feature Film and 10 U.S. and North American premieres.


AFI Fest 2019 Presented by Audi Announces Galas, Tribute and Special Screenings

This year's AFI European Union Film Showcase opens on December 4 with the U.S. premiere of Cannes-debuted Europa Cinema Labels prize winner ALICE AND THE MAYOR [ALICE ET LE MAIRE] (France), a whip-smart political two-hander directed by Nicolas Pariser (LE GRAND JEU), starring Fabrice Luchini (CYCLING WITH MOLIÈRE, IN THE HOUSE, POTICHE) and rising star Anaïs Demoustier (BIRD PEOPLE, THE NEW GIRLFRIEND, THÉRÈSE). The Closing Night selection is the nudist colony comedy PATRICK [DE PATRICK] (Belgium). The feature debut of Tim Mielants (PEAKY BLINDERS, LEGION) includes New Zealand comedy icon Jemaine Clement (FLIGHT OF THE CONCHORDS, WHAT WE DO IN THE SHADOWS) in a supporting role and took the Best Director prize at this year's Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Special Presentations highlight several high-profile international co-productions, including Hirokazu Kore-eda's (SHOPLIFTERS) French-language debut THE TRUTH [LA VERITÉ] (France/Japan) starring Catherine Deneuve and Juliette Binoche; A HIDDEN LIFE (Germany/U.S.), Terrence Malick's stunning World War II drama about Austrian conscientious objector Franz Jägerstätter; Agnieszka Holland's (IN DARKNESS; SPOOR) Berlin-debuted historical drama MR.
