Germany: Hubertus Mountain Refugio Announces Redesigns: Sustainability Meets Modern Design

In 2024, the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio in Balderschwang set an example for sustainable change with its redesign of 50 rooms. The redesign was realized in collaboration with interior designer Sarah Stapelfeldt and follows a clear philosophy of revitalization.

Existing, high-quality materials such as larch and spruce wood are not disposed of but given a new lease of life through careful renovation and redesign. This concept combines environmental awareness with artistic aspirations and enables the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio to offer its guests a unique atmosphere that promotes peace and relaxation.

Interior Design and Sustainability in the New Rooms

Upcycling as a Contribution to Environmental Protection and Artistic Creation

Upcycling refers to the responsible use of resources and is characterized by the principles of "reduce, reuse, and recycle". Instead of buying new furniture, the existing furniture was reworked and refurbished: Ornaments were removed, elements were recombined, and the design was reinterpreted with clean lines. In this way, the tried and tested wooden furniture was transformed into unique design objects that are both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The result is an interior concept that preserves history and carries it forward in new, appealing forms.

Interior Design with Natural Materials

The redesign used natural materials almost exclusively: Clay side tables, wool lampshades, and walls painted with clay paint. These materials create a harmonious environment in which guests can relax. The use of clay paint also helps to regulate humidity, promoting a healthy indoor environment.

The Corridor: A Tribute to the Forest

For Marc Traubel, owner of the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio, the forest theme is a central element of the concept. This is reflected in the hotel's corridors: Tree elements and wood accents create a natural, inviting atmosphere. A special highlight was integrated into the underground garage: A 70-year-old willow tree was adorned with a moss picture, symbolizing the new life that has found its way into the HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio.

Redesigning with guest feedback

Five sample rooms have already been implemented in 2023, with guest feedback specifically solicited. This valuable feedback has been incorporated into the redesign of the remaining Mountain Nest rooms to better meet the needs and desires of guests. The result is a project that is not only aesthetically pleasing but also practical and sustainable.

Sustainability as a Foundation for the Future

The HUBERTUS Mountain Refugio in the Allgäu shows how well-thought-out, sustainable concepts can be implemented in hotel design. The upcycling project not only creates a unique ambience but also sends a clear signal for the conscious use of resources and a love of nature. Apart from being an investment in the hotel's future, the redesign is also a contribution to environmental protection and the promotion of sustainable values in tourism.
