Food X Fire Book Review – Perfectly Prepared, Sizzling Over the Fire Cooking Techniques (Recipes)

After "In the Torture Chamber" section, which provides simple safety advice and suggestions as children enter the kitchen realm and begin to mix, pour, and stir potions of delicious concoctions.

Traditional suggestions are passed down through the magical book of cooking spells include making sure your cooking chamber is clean, supplies ready, hands washed, and if using knives for the first time, practice the secret SASS spell: "S-Stop, make sure no one is within arm's reach; A-Away – Cut away from your body and fingers not toward them; S-Sharp – A dull knife is dangerous! A sharp, clean knife is a safer knife. Ask an adult to check the knives before you use them and sharpen any that are dull; S-Store When you're done using a knife, put it away in a sheath or knife block."

Across six main sections including "Common Recipe Terms," "Breakfasts," "Mains," "Sides," "Desserts & Treats," "Drinks," plus 'Conversions" to help budding homeschooled home chefs understand the mathematical differences between measurements, and a "Recipe Index."

Pancakes are always a simple recipe for up-and-coming cooks, so "Aralia Berry Jam and Pancakes," (page 14) which includes delicious Blue Berry syrup which can be substituted for traditional maple and other fresh fruit topping allows these young cooks the opportunity to be creative with a recipe that is difficult to ruin.

Filled with veggies, children can practice their knife skills (always in the presence of an adult) to dice the frittata egg mixture. For The Unofficial Hocus Pocus Cookbook for Kids, Thoreson includes "Harvest Festival Pizza" (page 30) which also includes making the crust, a simple method to help children understand fractions and measurements. Any recipe for pizza can be altered and, like pancakes, difficult to ruin.

Two additional simple recipes that jumped out are "Full Moon Quesadilla," (page 32) with an intermediate experience level, wily wizards can add tacos (recipe not included) or other Mexican sides for a complete sizzling south of the border dinnertime experience.

A bewitching treat.

Quick party platters recipes for playdates, slumber parties and movie nights are "Halloween Party Snack Board" (page 49) and "Fresh Faced Cheese Platter," (page 53).
