Unidentified Review – A Mind-Bending, Shocking, Psychological Thriller

Unidentified, from Sony Pictures Classics, presents a mind-bending psychological thriller, as a school girl's murder and an office worker obsessed with true crime podcasts become intertwined in an investigation set against the backdrop of modern Saudi Arabia.

The film begins with a wide pan over endless desert. We see the tail gate of a Toyota truck, and then the camera moves to the body of a young girl, a sneaker, wrapped in her abaya. Then we cut to the apartment of another woman, Noelle, played by Mila Al Zahrani, applying her make-up as she listens to a unique true crime and makeup tips podcast hosted by Adwa Al Asiri. We understand immediately Noelle is drawn to both true crime and modernizing her life. The camera pans around the small sparsely furnished apartment, where stacks of unpacked labeled boxes line the walls and only the necessities are unpacked.

The next day, we see her at work in the police station digitizing old files. She has somehow freed herself from the tradition of marriage and while the job is mundane, it seems like she is in a place that she finds interesting.

When the body of the young girl is found, Majid, the police chief, played by Shafi Al Harthi, who also listens to the true crime podcast, ask Noelle to accompany them, as tradition calls for a female representative to be present. Soon, we see that Noelle really has an intuitive ability for catching the details. She is drawn to this case and continues to ask her supervisor to allow her to help and she is always turned down.

As the nation struggles between modernization and tradition, and the case becomes part of the system, we understand how quickly the death of a female is disregarded. The officers toss around the idea of an honor killing as a motive, and a member of her family did this and then dumped the body. We also understand that until the body is claimed, it cannot be buried.

Against the orders of the police captain, Noelle begins her own investigation. From the evidence gathered at the scene she builds a list of all the private girl's schools and begins, one by one driving to each school asking students if they know the girl with the embroidered "H" on her abaya and eventually she finds the dead girl's school. The headmistress stops her from formally interviewing the girls, but she ends up speaking with two girls, Dania, played by Somaya Al Shareef,  and Jude, played by Othoub Sharar, both rebellious, and already in trouble and frequenters to  the principals office, and the other who paused to long but told her to leave.

With this small confirmation of knowledge, Noelle follows the girls and finds them in a Hookah café. They explain they have very little time to be carefree, that even before they graduate from high school, they will be married to men arranged by their fathers, and these few moments are all the freedom they have and Amal, played by Amal Sami, the girl found in the desert, was simply hoping to have some fun before her marriage.

The next day she receives a text with a video of Amal, and the same hookah café. She shares the video with Majid, and finally they have an identity for the dead girl. Noelle continues to slowly piece together circumstantial evidence until she reaches a cousin of the family and she opens his Toyota truck and pulls the blanket from the backseat and sees it is stained with blood.

She explains to Majid, yes, she disregarded his orders again, but the backseat is covered in blood. The cousin, Mishal, played by Abdullah Al Qahtani, is arrested. This sets up the explosive and mind-bending third act, that creates a surprising and unpredictable ending.

Riveting and gripping, Unidentified is engrossing as the layers are slowly pulled away and each detail seems to lead to a conclusion until it doesn't, and the revelation proves that what looks like the truth may in reality be only a façade.

Even with a tagline of "evil hides in plain sight," and built as a traditional thriller, the plot twists leading to the unexcepted ending  will cause pause and surprise even the most sophisticated crime drama sleuths.

The cast, which is comprised of all Saudi Arabian talent, deliver strong performances, and as the film will be released internationally, introduce foreigners to the thin line between tradition and modernization.

An engrossing, spellbinding psychological thriller, Unidentified is a must see.
