Sight Review – A Heartwarming, Entertaining, and Inspiring Family Friendly Film

Sight, from Angel Studios, and Kaleidoscope Home Entertainment, brings to the screen the true story of Dr. Ming Wang, an impoverished Chinese prodigy who flees Communist China to become a pioneering eye surgeon in America.

The story begins in the slums of Calcutta, a child is sleeping, and she is approached by her stepmother who pours liquid into her eyes. We can hear the child screaming.

The Critic Review – An Entertaining Game of Deception Thriller

We are then in Nashville, Tennessee. Dr. Wang, played by Terry Chen, is removing the bandages from the eyes of his latest patient. Again, his genius results in sight restoration for someone who was once blind. He is at the height of his career, lauded and celebrated.

Ruth, played by Natasha Mumba, Dr. Wang’s assistant approaches him with a possible new patient, an Indian girl, Kajal, played by Mia Swami Nathan, who had been blinded by her stepmother, as children who are blind and begging in the slums of Calcutta earn more than children who are simply begging.

A nun, Sister Marie, played by Fionnula Flanagan, found her abandoned on the streets, as the burden of caring for a now blind child became too much, and brought her to America, to Nashville. And as the miracle of sight restoration lead by Dr. Wang’s skills was praised in the media, she brought Kajal to him.

Wise Guy Review – Entertaining Behind The Scenes Look at The Sopranos, A Must See

Dr. Misha Bartnovsky, played by Greg Kinnear, is Dr. Wang’s practice partner. The two who had just experienced the high of sight restoration were sure the same technique would generate the same results. After a preliminary review of the damage from the acid to the eyes, Dr. Wang made the decision to not go forward.

At this same time, he is experiencing flashbacks from his youth, during China’s Cultural Revolution. His parents, in communist China were medical professionals. He is haunted by a childhood friend, Lili, played by Sara Ye, who had been taken in the uprising. As children do, they made a pact, an oath to always be there for each other. Now, as an adult, Dr. Wang is seeing Lili in his sleep as his mind is opening the terror of that time, and she is there, and he couldn’t save her and honor his oath.

As the film moves between the present and the past, we begin to understand the determination of the parents to return their children to the educational level they were at before the uprising. Dr. Wang’s dedication to his dream of becoming a doctor fueled him. The government announced colleges would reopen, and he had been out of school for three years, and to enter he needed to get a passing score. What followed was nothing short of a miracle, as only three students in all of China, were accepted to an elite exchange program that landed the best and brightest with full scholarships to MIT. His dream of becoming a doctor was so near his grasp. Only one professor encouraged him, and he studied, did the work, and achieved perfect scores on his MCAT.

And Mrs Review – Charming RomCom Delivers Delightful Entertainment

Even now, with all his mastery, skills, and ability he was met again with an impossible hurdle. He could not restore this child’s eyesight. In a flashback he was hiding in a closet that had a fetus in amniotic fluid in a jar. When he awoke, he remembered the fetus in the amniotic fluid and understood the protective powers associated with it. The two doctors tested the idea of an amniotic membrane contact lens on blind rabbits, until finally, one rabbit had improved eyesight. With the success of the experiment, they decided to move forward with the operation on Kajal.

What follows is both heartwarming and heartbreaking.

Captivating and thought-provoking, Sight is an entertaining and inspiring family friendly film.

Out Come the Wolves Review – A Graphic, Gripping, Suspense Thriller

The cast deliver riveting and intriguing performances and present the medical knowledge with authenticity. The flashback scenes are equally engrossing, and for those without a lived knowledge, the scenes present a vivid truth.

More than simply the amazement of medical miracles, Sight highlights the dedication, determination and drive necessary, and which often comes at a cost, as Dr. Wang, while highly skilled is socially, somewhat stunted, and those scenes played with the right amount of humor.

Sight, uplifting and encouraging, is available for digital download in the UK on September 23, 2024.
