Human Trafficking Ring Busted in Houston

Police in Houston, Texas, discovered a holdover home in a human trafficking ring when they arrived to investigate an emergency report of a possible kidnapping and discovered 90 immigrants, malnourished, and squeezed into two rooms.

Daryn Edwards, Assistant Chief of Houston Police's Homeland Security Command, "When we got into the house we realized that there were over 90 people inside," Edwards said. "And so we immediately began to assess any kind of a special threat after that. Once we isolated that, we wanted to make sure we rendered any kind of medical care," Newsweek reported.

The discovery came after a report on Thursday, April 29, of a possible kidnapping. Edwards explained his team worked through the night to secure a warrant to enter the home, located in the southwest section of the city, and waited until Friday morning before gaining access.

Authorities quickly ascertained they had stumbled on a human trafficking ring and not a sex trafficking ring. No children were found and only five females were among the immigrants who were all dressed in "basic clothing." They explained they were from Central American countries and had not eaten in days.

"When we got into the house we realized that there were over 90 people inside," Edwards said. "And so we immediately began to assess any kind of a special threat after that. Once we isolated that, we wanted to make sure we rendered any kind of medical care," Newsweek reported.

With the pandemic still very much a priority in American first responders moved to determine the health status of the group. Several of the immigrants did test positive for the coronavirus and authorities explained with a group that size they are rapid testing each of them for COVID-19 and if enough test positive the group will be quarantined. Many had already begun to exhibit coronavirus symptoms.

No information is available on the smugglers that brought the immigrants into the city, how much they each paid to secure safe passage to freedom or who owns the holdover home where the immigrants were found.

This is a developing story.
