World News: Joe Biden, The Unexpected Troublemaker

The Biden Administration by recognizing the Armenian Genocide expresses the determination of the world's strongest power to lead in international diplomacy. But will this be followed by other decisions that will strengthen or damage the credibility of the U.S.?

In recognizing the historical reality of the 1915 Armenian genocide committed by Ottoman Empire troops during World War I, U.S. President Joe Biden out the United States, both politically and symbolically, back at the center of the global diplomatic game when his predecessor gradually extracted it.

Several reasons preside over this recognition. First, Democrat, Joe Biden responded to the humanist and altruistic convictions of his party against Barack Obama who, although Democrat, had never acknowledged genocide. The Republicans, certainly driven by the same convictions, however, have always abstained, arguing that there was no need to spare a valuable ally in the Mediterranean, hence the caution of previous administrations. The second reason is clearly diplomatic and geostrategic.

Refractory and Rapprochement

By abusing an ally, even if it was influential in the Eastern Mediterranean, Joe Biden shows, and the United States with him, that alliances will not and are not capable of covering or accepting anything and everything from the ally in question.

In President Biden's sights, there is no leader but Turkey President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who is staunchly opposed to Turkey's recognition of any genocide.

However, this refractory attitude, accompanied by a risky double-play towards Islamist terrorism, irritates In Europe, also an ally of the United States, in France in particular. As such, Recep Erdogan has made a mistake that the United States is clearly struggling to forgive, in addition, from the North American point of view in any case, a rapprochement deemed suspicious with Vladimir Putin's Russia, himself in delicacy with the White House.

By confronting Turkey with its historical responsibilities, Joe Biden is thus showing a form of political courage with consequences both internal and external to the U.S.A. The signal sent is thus very clear: to what were called softness because of his age are for their expense.

Interests and Influence

At the head of the most powerful of states, Joe Biden lays the groundwork for a new diplomacy, more offended and certainly finer than that of Donald Trump who did not reason in geopolitical terms but only individually, seeing in his interlocutors only possibilities of economic openings where the United States could assert its interests.

The new President of the United States, determined to lead a whole range of international problems (Taxation, climate, terrorism, geopolitical tensions) prints a tone to his mandate that reconnects with accents that Ronald Reagan (1981 - 1989) would not have denied when he sought to rehabilitate the image of the United States in the world after the Vietnamese fiasco (1965-1975).

Op/Ed: The Pushback From the Conviction of Derek Chauvin

Certainly, finer in his diplomatic approach than Donald Trump, Joe Biden, however, relies on the power and influence of the United States in the world to restore his country's lost place. imperialism? Policeman of the world? Finally, neither, but the only desire to restore the coat of arms of a country long accused, and rightly, of the defects cited. But will this position be tenable?

Cooling Turkey by recognizing the Armenian genocide is certainly a strong act, with a very strong symbolic and political significance, but for the credibility of the United States under the Biden era to be strengthened and continue to be strengthened, it will certainly take more. Joe Biden's term has only just begun so the world is watching and hoping.
